Admission Policy for Nursing Programs
Wayne Community College subscribes to the "open door"
policy as set by the North Carolina Community College system. The
college will admit al applicants who are high school graduates or
equivalent (GED) is required for admissions to all associate
degree programs. The college serves all students regardless of
race, color, sex, creed, national origin, age, or disability.
Persons wishing to apply for admission to a curriculum program
should contact the Office of Admissions and Records, for
necessary forms and information. The following items are
generally required for all curriculum programs: (1) application;
(2) high school transcript; (3) GED certification and scores, if
high school equivalent; (4) official college transcripts of all
previous work (if transfer student); (5) residence status
application; and (6) counselor interview.
Students seeking admission to limited admission programs, such as
nursing, have some additional requirements; (A) completion of a
high school or college Chemistry course with a grade of
"C" or better with the last ten (10) years, (B)
attainment of minimally acceptable scores on the ASSET Placement
Tests: Reading - 42, Writing - 44, Numerical - 42, and Elementary
Algebra - 42*; or COMPASS - Reading - 81, Writing - 71,
Prealgebra - 50, and Algebra - 37*. (An applicant who fails to
meet the minimum placement test requirements after three attempts
will not be considered for admission in the Nursing program for a
period of one year. The one-year waiting period begins with the
last date of testing.), (C) completion of interview with a
student development counselor, (D) verification of physical and
emotional health.
* Or successful completion of MAT 070 (or the college level
equivalency) with a grade of "C: or better.
Note: An applicant to the nursing program who has been convicted
of or pled guilty to a felony or misdemeanor (other than a minor
traffic violation) may not be eligible for licensure by the N.C.
Board of Nursing.
Review of Applicants: Applicants will be reviewed in stages:
A. Qualified applicants will be considered for admission by the
nursing faculty utilizing the following criteria: (A) reading,
numerical, elementary algebra, and writing ability as measured by
the ASSET or COMPASS placement Tests; (B) high school or college
science performance; (C) high school/GED or college overall
performance.
B. Qualified ADN and PN applicants completing all requirements
prior to the date designated on the ADN or PN application, will
be considered for admission by the Admissions Committee at their
regularly scheduled meeting until the program is filled.
C. Qualified ADN and PN applicants completing all requirements
after the date designated on the ADN and PN application will be
considered by the Admissions Committee at their regularly
scheduled monthly meeting until the program is filled.
Waiting List: Qualified applicants who are accepted after the
programs are filled will be placed on waiting list. A minimum of
fifteen persons will be listed in ranked order for the nursing
programs. Applicants on a waiting list will be notified if a
vacancy arises in the program of their choice for that year
Applicants on the waiting list for fall admission in one year
will not be automatically carried over to the following year(s).
The applicant must REAPPLY to be considered for admission in the
