1999 Graduates
The Valley High Charter School located at 514 South AE@ Street in Harlingen is pleased to announce its 1999-2000 Graduates. Valley High Charter School (photo above) commenced its first graduating class on Tuesday August 31st, 1999 at the Marriot Court Yard in Harlingen, Texas. Graduating and receiving the Valedictorian Award was Mary Melendez. Graduating and receiving the Salutatorian Award was Elisa Ortiz. Also Graduating were Luis Fernando Garcia, Vito Ibarra, Mari Hernandez, and Guadalupe (Wally) Gonzales.
The Key Note speaker for the ceremonies was State Representative District 38 Jim Solis. Representative Solis stated that he was a supporter of Valley High Charter School and said that if it was one or a thousand students graduating from the School, he would be there. He stressed to the students that A We all have to struggle in life@. He made a comparison of those who do right and go on to college and become a success with a good paying job verses those who stay home and do nothing other than AMastering the remote control.@
Mary Melendez who received the Valedictorian Award also received the State of Texas honor Graduate Certificate which gives her a full year paid to the College of her choice in the State of Texas. Valley Intervention Projects Inc. also donated Three Hundred dollars to the Valedictorian, Two Hundred dollars to the Salutatorian and One Hundred and Fifty dollars to all the other graduates.
