"Twice Forgotten" Ethnic Poles in Lithuania seek
to maintain their culture in the face of apathy (or outright opposition) from the
Lithuanian and Polish governments.
" ... A few are trying to buy their own land.
'My father had 12 hectares, but the communists came and the sovkhoz took the land away
from him,' says Maria Gryniewicz. 'Now my brothers and I are
trying to get it back. The officials are not causing any difficulties, but we cannot
get hold of all the papers we need.' All the paperwork has to be handled in
Salcininkai, 30 km away, which is served only by two buses a day." |
