Company Background
Since 1980 Overland Data, a publicly held company, has been a manufacturer
of half-inch tape solutions for reliable, high-performance backup, interchange
and archival storage. Serving distributors, OEMs and end users in virtually
every industry worldwide, the company offers three complete technology
choices: DLT, 18- and 36-track and 9-track, designed for workstations,
networks and midrange systems.
Recognized as an unmatched innovator in desktop and deskside half-inch tape technology, Overland Data pioneered the PC-based data interchange market in 1980. The company developed the first controller card and software that allowed a 9-track tape drive to be connected to a desktop personal computer, and redefined the market in 1991 with the first 9-track drives designed expressly for desktop user interchange requirements.
In 1993, Overland Data complimented its existing product lines by acquiring from Conner Peripherals a full performance 9-track drive and an 18-track half-inch cartridge drive based on IBM 3480 technology. Building on the 3480 product, Overland Data introduced in 1994 its L490E half-inch cartridge drive, the industry's first drive capable of reading and writing all IBM-standard half-inch cartridge tape formats. Also in 1994, Overland Data began offering a third half-inch technology, known as DLT, designed for workstation and network backup and Hierarchical Storage Management. In 1995, Overland Data introduced higher capacity half-inch tape solutions, including a 3490E data vault capable of backing up 50 GB in less than 5 hours, to address the need for high speed storage management in a shrinking time window. And in 1996, Overland Data took scaleable library capacity and performance to new heights with the DLT LibraryXpress, a revolutionary library solution for today's needs and tomorrow's requirements, designed to scale up to 4.8 terabytes of capacity.
Overland Data operates out of a modern 121,287 square foot headquarters in San Diego, California. The U.S. facility houses engineering and operations, with all production consolidated in the United States. Worldwide marketing and sales, also headquartered in San Diego, provides support to Overland Data's global network of OEMs, distributors, integrators and value added resellers. The company also provides high end storage solutions to corporate end users. Overland Data Europe, Ltd. is based in Wokingham, U.K., providing sales and support services to a network of distributors throughout Europe.
Overland Data continues to add value to each technology in the form of connectivity, software and product distribution, and is poised to meet the needs of its customers - today and tomorrow.
