Nicholas John Barley
Nicholas John BARLEY was Born in Darmstadt, Germany on Febuary 19,1764
He was the son of Mr & Mrs Leige BAHRLE supposedly from Bavaria
Leige BAHRLE and his wife unkown supposedly had 14 children. His sons
Nicholas and Jacob which was already married to an unknown women in Germany
before coming to America along with two other brothers that are also unknown that
imigrated to America about 1784 and landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Then
when he was old enough Peter BARLEY came over to join his brothers here in
America. Nicholas was born a subject of the Landgrave of Darmstadt (according
to his Naturalization Papers which he applied for August 31st, 1803).It has been
told down through the years that Nicholas landed in Philadelphia in the year of
1784 No one knows what Nicholas was doing between 1784-1790 other than he
married Mary Elizabeth WAGNER after getting here to America.He showed up in
the 1790 census for Washington County, Maryland (spelled Baily) as having two
male children under the age of 16 and two females living in the household. Does
that mean there was another brother older than John and a sister too? Nicholas'
son John BARLEY was born September 24, 1790 in Maryland so they probably
were in Maryland a short time before coming to Woodberry Township, Bedford
County, Pennsylvania. No one is sure when they arrived but Nicholas showed up
paying taxes on March 18, 1791 in Woodberry Township, Bedford County,
Pennsylvania. Nicholas along with his fater-in-law Peter WAGGONER and
brother-in-law Valentine WAGGONER bought 450 and 1/2 acres of land together
and in 1802, when the said land was paid for in full, it was split up three ways.
Nicholas and Mary at this time had 6 or 7 children and was farming their land.
Nicholas was still buying land and he ended up with a total of 1103 acres.

The Barley Homestead (which is still in the family) was built in 1812 on Nicholas'
land along with a springhouse are still standing.Nicholas and Mary's last child
was born about 1813 and that made a total of about 16 children and their listed
below and so on and so on and so on.

"Bloomfield township was organized December 8, 1876. Previous to that date it
had been included in Woodbury township. The soil of the township is of the best
quality, the buildings and inprovements are most excellent, and the people are
industrious, moral and prosperous.
The early settlers of this locality were chiefly of German descent. Their habits of
industry, economy and thrift have been transmitted to their posterity, the present
inhabitants, who, constantly progressing, are rendering this little township one of
the best agricultural communities in the county.
Among the pioneer were the WAGNER, BARLEY, REPLOGLE and CLAPPER
families."

Daniel in 1846 returned from a trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he experianced "Sunday School". He was so impressed that he started a Sunday School at the Barley Lutheran Church, the first in the central part of the state.
Daniel married Sophia Croil on Dec 3 1843. Sophia was born on Feb 26 1819 in Bedford, Bedford Co., Pa. She died on Jan 11 1849.
