What you need to know about Level 2 cache in motherboards

Level 2, or L2, cache is RAM, housed on the motherboard, that is dedicated to remembering frequently-accessed information. Since a CPU can access data from cache memory much faster than from standard RAM, a large cache can significantly increase system performance by speeding up access to often-used data.

A majority of PCs today come with 256KB or 512KB of L2 cache, which is adequate for general business applications and users with low graphics requirements. Larger caches of 1MB and more are available and are useful for memory-intensive applications, such as graphic design or complicated databases.

L2 cache is typically Static RAM, or SRAM, which is faster than the memory used for conventional system RAM, which is normally Dynamic RAM, or DRAM.
