DISABLING ONBOARD SOUND
Q: I have a new DataStor 233MHz MMX system, and I can't get my new sound
card to work.  All I see in Windows' Device Manager is a yellow exclamation mark over a CRD 4237B-3 listing.  What's the problem?

A: In most cases, you need to disable existing sound devices before installing new ones.  According to my sources, the CRD4237B-3 is an audio chip that's built into the motherboard.  You must disable this device before the new sound card can operate.
I believe the proper solution is to start your CMOS Setup routine, find the Integrated Peripherals section, and locate the Onboard Audio Chip entry.  Disable the onboard audio, save your changes, and reboot.  If the chip is still listed in the Device Manager, try removing it and rebooting.  Once the on-board audio device is removed, you should be able to install and configure the new sound card properly.

Did the little yellow speaker that controls audio volume disappear from your  taskbar's system tray? If so, open the Multimedia Control Panel. Under the  Audio tab, check the "Show volume control on the taskbar" option in the  Playback section (in Win98, the option is at the bottom of the dialog box).  Click on OK, and the yellow speaker should return. If not, try reinstalling your  audio driver and then repeat these steps.
