WHY DO WE HAVE SPRING AND FALL BREAKFASTS ?

A good question, the answer of which, may have been
misplaced since the RRC Spring and Fall Breakfasts started
back on March 12, 1994.

One obvious answer is that these Breakfast events are a
great opportunity for fellowship among the Radio Amateurs
of Berks County.

Another answer could be that this is an opportunity for the
Hams of the area to take their XYL, or significant other,
to an event that is social in nature, and not just Ham
Radio focused.

Yet, another might be that this is a chance for all of the
Ham clubs of Berks County to come together once or twice a
year.

However, as I recall, the PRIMARY reason was to provide the
members of the RRC a daylight opportunity to get together
for a Ham Radio meeting.

Seven years ago, several RRC members indicated that they
did not want to come to the Friday evening meetings,
because they did not like driving home when it was dark.

The BOD suggested that we have a daylight meeting two or
three times a year (Field Day is one of these daylight
meetings). Give and take discussion came forth, and eureka,
the first RRC breakfast meeting back on March 12,
1994.....That is the rest of the story.

LAST MONTH'S MEETING JANUARY 12, 2001
===================================================
By: RRC Secretary Al Brailer, W3UQC

President Harry Hoffman, W3VBY, welcomed everyone to our
February meeting, which was attended by 42 including six
guests.

Everyone, including the guests, introduced themselves with
name and call.

Harry, W3VBY, introduced one new member, Mark L. Schropp,
Jr., N3RVK, of Schuylkill Haven, PA. Mark used to be a club
member from 1994 to 1998 and is returning after an absence
of 3 years.

President Harry, W3VBY, had several new member club badges
to hand out as follows:
Bob KB3FNX (not present)
Ed N2AQJ (not present)
Larry WB3GTP (not present)
Dan KB3FSC (not present)
Amy KB3FSD (present)
Michael KA3MVN (not present)

Harry, W3VBY, spoke about the VE exams held last month on
Saturday January 27, 2001 at the Fire Training Bldg. Harry
mentioned that Cal Wagner's daughter and wife both now have
their Amateur Radio License. Congratulations.

As the result of the survey taken at the last monthly
general meeting, we are going to have five or six decent
door prizes at each meeting. The first three door prize
winners automatically become the clean-up committee for the
evening.

Tickets for our March 17, 2001 Breakfast at Chef Alan's are
$8 each in advance and are available from Art Becker,
W3JZN, or Al Brailer, W3UQC.

President Harry Hoffman, W3VBY, asked, how many in
attendance have personal computers and how many have Email
capability. Pennsylvania Governor Ridge has recently signed
legislation to eliminate, for a week, the 6% state sales
tax on the sale of a new computer system, starting on
Sunday February 18 and running to February 25, 2001.

Harry, W3VBY, asked Rich Ahrens, W3WJC, to give us an
update on our RRC Repeater. Rich reported that everything
is working fine. Rich also mentioned that you should be
careful, not confuse intermodulation problems in your own
rig, with problems at the repeater site.

On another subject, Rich, W3WJC, said he has been in
contact with Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH, and has given
Riley various meeting dates but so far, no agreement as to
what day Riley will be able to attend one of our RRC
meetings and speak to us.

President Harry, W3VBY, passed around a sign-up sheet for
Field Day 2001, to indicate what station they would like to
operate, or help-out. We need CW, phone, digital,
satellite, and solar power stations. We also are in need of
a chairperson to coordinate all Field Day activities.

Harry, W3VBY, had a report on last month's survey. Someone
said, "we were not doing enough technical things." In the
future, we will have meetings that will have technical
discussions on items such as PSK31 and antennas.

An eleven-minute video was shown on "ELECTRICAL SAFETY
PRINCIPALS AND PROCEDURES"
A. Electrical Shock
B. Preventing Electrical Shock
C. Think Safety

For our Show & Tell, President Harry, W3VBY, had with him a
simple three-wire tester, shown as Figure 6 on page 16 of
the February 1976 issue of QST. Harry, W3VBY, also had with
him an "AC Ground Fault - Voltage Probe" Harry explained
it's use to determine the Hot wire, Neutral and Ground
wires. In addition, he described samples he had of
three-wire power cable, a duplex-grounded outlet, circuit
breakers and a Ground Fault Indicator.

Harry, W3VBY, went over the Technician Class questions from
a RADIO SHACK manual, regarding Electrical Safety.

Rich Ahrens, W3WJC, was operating his computer after the
meeting was adjourned for those who wanted to signup for a
ULS (Universal Licensing System) number.

Walt Horn, W3OKX, said, if you ever get to go to Europe,
you will find that some city streets may have D.C., or 25
or 40 or 50 or 60 cycle power. You just have to be very
careful.

Being no further business, the meeting was adjourned about
9:15 p.m.

Plenty of refreshments were available for all.

PAST PRESIDENT WALT HORN, W3OKX, RECOVERING
===================================================
RRC member and past President Rev. Walt Horn, W3OKX, is
recovering after cardiac surgery that took place at The
Reading Hospital and Medical Center (RHMC).

Walt went in for some tests on Wednesday February 21, 2001,
and wound up receiving a new heart valve and three heart
bypass grafts on Wednesday February 28.

On March 1, Walt's XYL Millie, KA3YRO, told us that Walt is
making a GREAT recovery after the four-hour surgery.

I spoke with Walt on the telephone on Sunday March 4 and he
sounds like he is doing well, he did mention that the
mattresses at the RHMC are too hard!

As you read this, Walt should have been released from the
RHMC and recovering at his daughter's home. If you would
like to drop a card or note to Walt you can send it to his
home address: 2642 Bernville Road, Reading, PA
19605-9642.

We are all routing for Walt to make a quick and complete
recovery, and get back to the active and involved Walt,
W3OKX, that we all know.

2000 PA QSO PARTY - "PRELIMINARY RESULTS"
===================================================
Based on a preliminary posting at the following Web page:

http://www.qsl.net/narc/paqso.htm

Your RRC had a good showing in the 2000 PA QSO Party held
back on October 14 and 15, 2000. There were seventeen RRC
members sending in their score on behalf of the Reading
Radio Club. This is the same number of entries that we had
in 1999.

Here are the seventeen entries with their preliminary
scores:

1) Hal Messer, K3ATO - 192,330
(Multi-Multi station with Roger Schropp, N3IVY)
2) Craig Huntsinger, K3CWH - 105,455
(Multi-Single station with Mel Salzman, W3MEL)
3) Rich Ahrens, W3WJC - 42,679
4) Duane Redline, W3UQH - 37,128
5) Keith Redline, N3KLJ - 31,835
(Mobile Station operating in several counties)
6) Dave Hill, W3DWH - 28,466
7) Larry Stamm, WB3EVL - 24,770
8) Nelson Kase, N3ZBI - 21,568
9) Jim Nicholas, WA3FYR - 13,950
10) Bernie Shaffer, KF3DO - 11,372
11) Larry Shepherd, K3LS - 11,224
12) Bob Hartman, K3YVT - 9,996
13) Rudy Goretski, KW3T - 7,675
14) Stan Parr, W3MJR - 6,584
15) Al Brailer, W3UQC - 2,840
16) Jeff Griffith, KB3EIS - 1,218
17) Greg Griffith, KB3EJX - 285

The RRC total for 2000 appears to be 549,375. In 1999, we
had a total score of 611,092 points.

In general, the individual RRC member's scores were
somewhat lower then in the 1999 PA QSO Party.

However, special mention should be made of the excellent
percentage increase over their 1999 scores made by Nelson
Case, N3ZBI (1,640 vs. 21,568), the Multi-Single station of
Craig Huntsinger, K3CWH; and Mel Salzman, W3MEL (51,725 vs.
105,455); and Stan Parr, W3MJR (4,806 vs. 6,584). NICE WORK
GUYS.

Hal Messer, K3ATO, and Roger Schropp, N3IVY, ran a
Multi-Multi station and improved their score over the
previous year's effort (190,460 vs. 192,330).

There were some new stations submitting their scores for
the RRC this year: Larry Shepherd, K3LS; Jeff Griffith,
KB3EIS; Greg Griffith, KB3EJX, and Bob Hartman, K3YVT. We
hope to hear these stations on the bands again, during the
2001 PA QSO Party.

We will publish the top ten club scores when the official
"final results" are published sometime in the next month or
two.

Thanks to all the members that joined in this RRC team
effort. I hope you had a good time.

Mark your calendar now for the year 2001 PA QSO Party
scheduled for October 13 and 14.

COOL WEB SITE
==================================================
I found this month's COOL Web Site right on the ARRL Web
page dated March 3, 2001.

Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, a Contributing Editor to QST directed
us to a COOL Web page provided by the Audio Services
Division of the FCC's Mass Media Bureau that can be used to
calculate antenna Height Above Average Terrain (HAAT). Stan
went on to say that Dave Flack, W6DLF, clued him into this
page.

What the page will do is calculate the HAAT as it relates
to the average height of the surrounding terrain in a
10-mile radius of your antenna or your repeater's antenna.
This is a great Amateur Radio tool.

Why did I find this Web site interesting ?

Back in 1973, the FCC put some new repeater rules in
effect, and all repeaters had to be re-licensed. One of the
requirements was to submit HAAT, Effective Radiated Power
(ERP), and Radiation Pattern calculations. The members of
the Repeater Technical Committee worked hard and long to
come up with all of the required submissions (a total of 52
pages).

In 1973, a paper topographical map was used to make the
forty measurements that were required to calculate the
HAAT. The committee came up with a HAAT for the six meter
repeater transmitting antenna (yes, the repeater was on six
meters in those days 52.575 MHz receive and 52.680 MHz
transmit) of 651 feet.

Lets spin the clock ahead to the year 2001, and go to the
following Web page:

http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/asd/bickel/haat.html

For drill, you may like to input the RRC W3BN repeater
location, and antenna information.

Latitude:
40 22 32 North

Longitude:
75 53 17 West

- - Enter the height (in meters) of the antenna radiation
center above mean sea level:
347.5 meters = (1140 feet) x (0.3048)

- - Enter Number of Evenly Spaced Radials, or Select a
number:
SELECT 8 (every 45)

Scroll to the bottom of the Web page and click
"Submit Query"

Wait for the "Results:"

Calculated HAAT = 202 meters
(Antenna Height Above Average Terrain)

Converting 202 meters to feet:

(202 meters) x (3.281) = 663 feet

In the year 2001, the FCC confirms the HAAT data supplied
by a bunch of crazy Amateur Radio Operators 27 years ago.

651 feet vs. 663 feet, as we use to say "is close
enough for government work."

You can also do some neat plotting of signal strength
contours from your antenna using this Web page. You will
need to know your ERP in kW. Let me suggest the following
parameters as a starting point:

Option 2
360 (every 1)
VHF TV Channels 7-13 (174 to 216 MHz)
Nondirectional
Show Individual Radial HAATs, Distances to Contours, Area
Within Contours.
dBu Contours: 30 40 50 60 70
Map Size = 1.5 degrees (height & width)
Relative Scale = 20
Continental USA
Click: "Plot Contours on a Tiger Census Map"

Wait, this will take a few minutes.
Have fun.

FYI:
Decibel A ratio of two levels, based upon a logarithmic
scale. Often abbreviated as dB.

dBu The voltage relative to 0 dBu. 0 dBu is defined as
0.775V

WE CAN ALWAYS USE SOME MORE COOL WEB SITES

If you know of a great Web site, please pass the address
along and we will consider posting your favorite Ham Radio
related site, so that we may all enjoy viewing and using
the Web page.

DID YOU KNOW .....
==================================================
.....that RRC member Dudley Christian, WA3JXW, received
some nice words of appreciation from the EPA ARRL Section
Manager Eric Olena, WB3FPL, on page 115 of the March 2001
issue of QST. Here is what Eric had to say: "There are many
Hams who do a tremendous amount of work and good deeds and
yet do not wish to take any official credit for all of the
good things that they do. For instance, Dudley, WA3JXW, has
been handling traffic in and out of the Berks County area
for years without a thought of getting recognition for his
work. We should all take the time to say thank you to each
of these selfless individuals who give so much to Amateur
Radio. Without the vast volume of work that these people do
we would be sure losers."

.....that we need a RRC member to collect the VE testing
opportunities and give a report on the Friday evening "RRC
Meeting On The Air." We thank Larry Stamm, WB3EVL, for
doing this task for the last fourteen months. However,
Larry can no longer do this for the Club. If you would like
to help, I am sure Larry would be willing to share with you
how he collects the testing information each week. You can
contact Larry at [email protected]

.....that I could use some news reporters for this RRC
E-MAIL NEWS passing along information about the members of
the RRC.
