The 1999 Hopman Cup international tennis tournament was broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from the Burswood resort in Perth, Western Australia.I was involved in the broadcast as a TV cameraman but the event got off to a bad start when some internal politicking saw my role diminished somewhat and I became a touch depressed as a result.
So the news that George Lazenby would be attending the day session of the tournament on Thursday January 7th couldn't have come at a more fortuitous time and my spirits lifted immediately. And it got better - George was lined-up to do an interview with our Presenter/Anchor which made it possible for me to meet him and have a few of my OHMSS items autographed.
My most sincere thanks must go to ABC-TV Production Co-ordinator, Voja Milasich, who took my fannish desire to meet with George seriously enough to arrange it.
Special thanks also to Ian 'Muckie' McKay, who made sure he was present with his trusty Betacam to record the event for me - the frame-captures that follow are from a VHS copy of the SP Beta footage he shot.
And to members of the Perth ABC Hopman Cup crew who were so clearly happy to see me happy, I extend considerable warmth. Your reactions added still more to the experience of meeting the only actor from the Southern hemisphere to play screen super-spy, James Bond, secret agent 007 ; the man to star in what is considered by a good majority of fans to be the best 007 film thus far (and by the rest to be in the top 5 of 19), On Her Majestys Secret Service,
Ladies and gentlemen, family and friends, I give you GEORGE LAZENBY:
SPECIAL NOTE I AM THE ONE WITH THE GLASSES

Me thanking George for his time and asking if he'd mind signing a couple of things. |
The signing of my first-release OHMSS video sleeve (slightly obscured by the laserdisc cover). Perth ABC-TV Floor Manager, Andrew Dolberg is in the b/g |

Signing my laserdisc of OHMSS. He looked at the pictures of himself and asked, "Who's that young fella?"... |
...To which I answered, "same guy who's signing this disc - only not as good-looking". I couldn't get over how a man could improve so much with age. |

George was impressed by the gatefold laserdisc but not by the pictures of Diana Rigg... |
...At which point I grinned, thinking, "I didn't know he was that disenchanted with her". |
