[Home]

I have a problem that has just surfaced when starting up @home.  When  double click to start @home.. it takes a while.. approx 20 seconds. Then hits me with the message..something like error in javascript.. then asks me if I want to use the last configuration. When I click ok.. it opens up netscape.. but doesn't load the homepage.. or doesn't start @home's browser. After a few seconds.. a little box will pop up saying that there is an error in the start up configuration... and tells me to contact my administrator.  Also says syntax error.html It will finally open to netscape.. but doesn't load anything.. also no @home broswer. Any idea where all this is coming from and what caused this to happen?

ANSWER

Usually the symptoms you describe occur when Netscape cannot find an internet connection upon startup. The error about javascript occurs because Netscape cannot find the startup script on the @home server. After you click OK (or whatever it is) Netscape goes ahead and starts, but there is no connection made. It's in a "work offline" mode. This can happen either because your network control panel\network) is misconfigured or your @home connection is not working properly. If you are sure your machine is configured properly (i.e. it has worked before) then the fault is probably outside your machine. One thing I've done successfully is to unplug the modem power momentarily and force the modem to re-establish communications w/ @home. I'm running two machines on a small lan here at home w/ separate ISP's. I've seen times when one machine was OK but the other couldn't see the network. Unplugging the modem sometimes fixes this.  If your machine works at times, I suggest you don't mess w/ it's configuration. When all else fails,  my first step is to completely power down my system (and I mean completely - including the modem -  I even shut down the surge protection) to completely reset all hardware/software. I need to do this occasionally because my wife/kids play some games that seem to mess things up in memory and just a system reboot doesn't seem to clear everything. I went through all this when @home was first installed and the problem finally was found to be faulty electronics in a box about 300 ft. from my house resulting in a weak signal. If you continue having these problems, get @home to check the signal strength coming into your modem. If it's weak you'll get sporadic problems.
