How Do I Make My Computer Secure?

1. File and Print Sharing

Computer security is strengthened when file sharing is disabled. Once you have logged in, file sharing allows anyone using your computer to access, edit, copy, delete or resave your files. So, you will want to make sure the file-sharing feature is always disabled on your system.

To disable file sharing on your Mac:

  • 1.Click the Apple icon at the top left corner of the screen
  • 2.Click CONTROL PANEL in the drop-down menu
  • 3.Click EXTENSION MANAGER in the next menu
  • 4.A new box appears with a list of items and check boxes
  • 5.Scroll down the list and find: FILE SHARING
  • 6.Verify the box is NOT CHECKED
  • 7.Scroll farther down the list and find: PRINT SHARE
  • 8.Verify this box is also NOT CHECKED                       9.Click OK
  • 10.Close the Control Panel

To disable file sharing on your PC:

  • 1.Click on START at the lower left corner of the screen
  • 2.Select SETTINGS
  • 3.Select CONTROL PANEL from the menu that follows
  • 4.A new windows opens
  • 5.Double click the NETWORK icon
  • 6.A new window opens
  • 7.Click the CONFIGURATION tab
  • 8.Locate and click the bar near the bottom of the box labeled: FILE AND PRINT SHARING
  • 9.The File and Print Sharing window opens
  • 10.Verify that both boxes are UNCHECKED to disable file sharing and printing
  • 11.Click OK until you return to the desktop                    If you choose to enable file sharing, consider using password protection.
