How Do I Troubleshoot My E-mail Connection?

  • If you are having difficulty with your @Home e-mail connection, you need to "ping" the mail server to verify whether it recognizes your computer.

To ping the mail server from your PC:
1.Click START in the lower left corner of your screen
2.Choose PROGRAMS from the new list
    3.Another menu displays
4.Find and double click MS-DOS COMMAND PROMPT
    5.A blank DOS window opens.
6.A blinking cursor displays with the following prompt: C:/ >
    7.Type: ping mail
    8.Hit ENTER

Four replies should appear on your screen at the end of the ping test. If not, there is a server connection problem.  You have to call tech support.

If this does not work I was sent E-mail explaining that this did not work for one person. He had to use the direct approach.

Example

ping mail.rdc2.mi.home.com

You would have the know which mail server your using. By calling tech and asking them or posting in the @Home Newsgroups someone here can also tell you.
