Keel Family History
My GGGG Grandfather
Arthur Keele and his wife, Sarah Monnote were both born in London England in the early 1700s. They were married around 1740 also in London and their first three sons, Jacob, James, and John were born in London in 1741, 1743, and 1745 respectively. Arthur was a cabinet maker by trade. The family departed for America in 1747. They first landed in Delaware, but afterward moved to Virginia and settled in Wythe County. As was customary, Jacob, the elder, was made an apprentice, and not having fulfilled his apprenticeship, he was left in London It is believed that Arthur had at least eight children.
My GGG Grandfather
Richard S. Keel, son of Arthur, was born in Wyethe Co. Virginia. He enlisted into Captain James Lyon's and P. Haraton's Company of Rangers in Henry County Virginia during the spring of 1776. He served until July 19, 1777. After the expiration of his first service, he married Lydia Richmond in Washington, N.C., July 19, 1777. They moved to the frontier of N.C. on the Nolachucky River in Washington County (now Tennessee). Here he enlisted as a Private in Captain Samuel William's Company, Col Sevier's N.C. Reg, and was in the Battle of King's Mountain in Dec. 1780. He was allowed a pension on cert #7498, issued April 16, 1833. Many D.A.R. records show that Richard S. Keele died in 1849. From Church records, we find Richard & Lydia were members of Cherokee Creek Baptist Church which is 5 miles South of Jonesborough.
My GG Grandfather
Jacob Keele, son of Richard, was born in 1790 and died Feb. 08, 1862 in Coffee County, TN. He married 1. ? Wierman about 1807, VA., 2. Sarah Jane Hawley in 1833/34, 3. Annah, b. abt. 1794, d. before 1860, 4. Serena Cox, 2-28-1860. Jacob had at least 11 children.

Wiley Preston Keele, son of Jacob, was born 1818/1821. He married Martha Ferrell . Early Middle TN Marriages- Vol. 1 - Grooms (alphabetical according to grooms names) Listed is: Keele, W.P. to Martha E. Ferrell 3-7-1859 (Coffey Co) Martha was the daughter of Charles & Louisa Ferrell.
The Ferrell name is also prominent back in the Coffee/Bedford County TN area where they all came from. There is a cemetery back there with several members buried with both Keel and Ferrell family names.
Wiley Preston Keel was in partnership with his brother James W. Keele in Manchester city before 1844 (CCo Deed Records). James W. Keele was a farmer, a Baptist preacher, owned a
carding mill, a ghrist mill, and the first hotel in Manchester TN.
Wiley & Martha moved to Arkansas and then to Texas. They returned to Arkansas and both died about the same time. Family stories say they were stricken with an epidemic and both died on the trail.

Notes:
Wiley P. and Martha both died at about the same time. Sometime between 1870 and 1874. It states in the probate document that both are deceased. The children were taken in by various friends, relatives and neighbors. A guardian was appointed for each child. Bedford Forrest went to live John and Rhody Ann Keele Foster. On the 1880 Ben Co Census, Bedford Forrest, son of Wiley P. is listed as an orphan and is living in the household of Rhoda Ann and John Foster. . There is an account for much of the children's support in the probate file. Eliza Jane and Sarah attended school in Bentonville. There are sales tickets from a local dry goods store where they bought satin ribbons, etc. They had to buy some new clothes for school. This was probably a boarding school. Doctor Morris also paid for a dress to be made for Mollie Keel and other expenses for her as late as 1889. Mollie is another name for Mary.
In probate files, household effects owned by the deceased Mrs. Keele, listed as a feather bed, bedclothes & a side saddle were delivered to Eliza and one feather bed to Mary E. Keele. Two bed steads were left in possession of the guardian at the time, who was W. T. Ferrell. In 1875,
there was a sale of one house for $50.00, one cow & yearling for $10.00, one mule for $50.00, one heifer for $10.00 and one cow & yearling for $8.50. The real estate was still in the names of the heirs as late as1877.
The children lived off rent from the farm and the sale of wheat and corn crops probably shared with the renter who was working the farm. The farm was located on Little Sugar Creek between Bentonville and Pea Ridge AR.
Children of Wiley Preston Keel & Martha Ferrell
1. Eliza Jane Keele was taken in by a man named Doctor Morris. His first name was "Doctor", he was not a doctor by profession. His wife had died and he was raising several children. Doctor Morris over saw alot of the liquidating of the property, etc. It looks like they rented the property and sold the crops of wheat, corn, for a time. Maybe on a crop-sharing basis with the renters. The money from the crops went to support the children. Eliza Jane lived with Doctor as he was her legal guardian until she became of legal age then she married him and they had several more children. Eliza Jane is buried next to Doctor in the Barron Cemetery in Vaughn, AR.
Eliza and Doc married Jan 16, 1879

Email notes from Great Grandson
I found the letter my aunt Velma had sent me concerning info on
Sarah/Sallie. What she really said was as follows:
"Also, I remember a story my mother told me years ago that I should
have gotten more particulars on. She said her mother, Sarah Keel, came over here from Europe (I believe) with her parents and her father's brother with his family. They were enroute across the country (with supposedly a lot of money) and were set upon by robbers. Grandma Sarah's parents were killed and Sarah was raised by her uncle and aunt. According to Mama they made a maid out of Grandma Sarah and she had to work for them until she married."
Obviously this information was third hand and a lot of time had gone by
between the tellings. We'll probably really never know for sure what
happened, but the parents ended up dead and Sarah was raised by her
uncle and aunt (I assumed it was her father's brother, but she really only said "her aunt and uncle").
