The real mystery about The X-Files movie is the title. It
should have been called The Y-Files, as in "Why" was
it made? The only logical answer is Money! No need
for the FBI on that one. Where was the fun of the
series, where was the what-if's and the wonder why's?
The movie starts with a snow covered blizzard and a
subtitle; "Dallas, Texas", a pause, "sometime during the
ice age", Cute; Promising. A few alien encounters later
and it's present time. Enter Scully and Fox, nothing new
here. Mulder starts with a what-if sentence and Scully
counters with a why-not answer and for those who
don't follow the X-Files t.v. series, you are now up to
date with both characters.
From there it goes down hill. Everything is calmly
over-explained to the viewing audience. No secrets
here, no conspiracy, no guessing who is on what side; it
is all laid out on the table for us. The special effects are
good, the cheap jump-out-at-you effects get there
desired reactions, but the fun is gone. One of the best
things about the series is it's ability to challenge your
mind, to make you question what is real and what is
unexplained. It makes you laugh at your own gullibility
and your fears. The only thing laughable about this
movie, was that they expected you to believe all the
plot explanations they gave, no matter how
unbelievable they may have been.
Gillian and David both proved they are not big enough
for the "Big" screen. However, as usual, Martin Landua
showed us even in small roles he's a big actor. The
purpose of "The X-Files" movie should have been to
better itself, to take a concept stuck on the small screen
and make it bigger, instead it fell victim to it's own press
and the audience was left watching a two hour t.v.
show with sticky floors and uncomfortable seats.
Personally, I feel The X-Files movie is the only thing in
desperate need of a cover-up!
