The Map
Eventually I'll put up some kind of better background information but for now what I've done is take the hex width 161.23 miles and multiplied it by .9306049 and then squared it to get the square miles of the hex. I t came out to be close to 22,500 sq. miles (I didn't use a calculator so if its way off let me know). For the population I figured about half this hex was livable (ocean, really dense parts of the forest, extra mushy swamp land, and rocky or poor soil areas) and figured about 5 population per square mile (medieval demographics said 30 per sq mile was the medieval average) since its not very densely populated in my minds eye and I came up with around 55,000 population. This breaks down as follows, The Temple of Nine and its surrounding town have a population of 1,000 gnomes, the town of Sebek has a population of 4,000 gnomes, and scattered throughout the hex are 60 villages with an average population of 700 each, 8,000 more gnomes lives in small farms or are traveling workers or are nomadic forest gnomes. O.K. thats 50,000, of the other five thousand 4,000 are beastmen and 1,000 are wolfen. The beastmen mainly inhabit the marshes with some living in the forests, the wolfen dwell in the forests only.
Local critters: I was thinking about a creature that resembles a six-legged crocodile with two small horns sticking out over its eyes, called a horned one by the gnomes, they grow to around 30' long, and are very aggressive and feared throughout the swamps. The other one I was thinking of resembles a cross between a squirrel and a spider monkey but once again its got six limbs and is hunted for its fur and for food, found in the forests.
Other thoughts: each village has a tavern and 1 in 5 has an Inn, trade is with barter but copper coins are minted for the wealthy. Villages near water use fishing nets, those near the ocean also trap crusteaceans (damn I need a spelling checker). Primary mode of transportation is the heel-toe express, wealthy travel in rick-shaws or those other thingies I can't of right now.
