Rumored CheatsThere are people who dislike cheating. This I can accept. But there are people who go way way beyond disliking cheating, into some kind of fantasy world. They email bomb me, threaten me, hack my page, etc. This cannot be tolerated. I list them here, and their offenses.

A few times in the history of Team Fortress, a cheat has come along that is so good that it just makes you pee your pants with glee. This cheat blows them all away.
It is so perfect that it seems like it was planned, everything falls in to place so nicely and neatly that you have to appreciate the good people at Team Fortress Software for their lack of game testing abilities. I don't blame them, though, this cheat is incredibly cryptic, by far the most obscure I've seen (and I've seen a lot). While many people played a part in discovering it, I was the one who made the final step in the discovery of this cheat, at least the first to go public with it.
The cheat is very complicated to do, so please read the directions several times and try it on a few servers before you email me a question.
Here's how to do it:
1. When you are entering a game using Quake World (either regular or GL Quake World will work), type the word "skins" into the console, but do not push enter yet.
2. Wait until you see the phrase "Checking Sounds..." that is shown when connecting to a server. As soon as you see this, push enter, so the command "skins" will be sent to the system. DO NOT push it before "Checking Sounds..." or your computer will freeze. It's ok if you push it a little after, even a lot after will still work.
3. When you enter the game, one of four things will happen. I will list them below and what to do in each case.
Regular Observer
: You will just be a regular observer, like always. If this happens, choose a team and a class that you want to cheat with, then reconnect and go back to step 1 and try again.Floating Observer:
You will be like a regular observer, only hovering in mid-air. If this happens, choose a team and a class that you want to cheat with. You're player will be able to hover. This is identical to the Flying cheat, described in another section. If you want to go into Ghost Mode, however, you must then reconnect and go to step 1 and try again.Observing Class:
This is what you want to be. Sometimes you will be the last class you choose, sometimes you will be a random class. Proceed to step 4.Floating Observer Class
: You can use this to do the Ghost Mode cheat also, and it makes for a different experience, although it is harder to navigate. Gravity doesn't affect you in this mode. If you want to use this mode, go step 4, if not, reconnect and go to step 1 and try again.Don't be alarmed if you have to reconnect many, many times. Eventually it will work. This happens to me often.
4. In Ghost Mode, you have to reconnect each time you want to change your class once you have begun the cheat. If you want to change the class you are at this point, type in the class you want to be in the console, and get killed or kill yourself (you are still vulnerable for now).
5. Now you should be the class you want to cheat with, and the team selection menu should be on the screen. Instead of choosing one or two for blue or red teams, choose the option that is most likely not shown, "8", observer mode.
You are now a Ghost.
The Features:
This cheat is a mysterious marriage between observer mode and regular class mode. You seem to get the best of both worlds. Below I describe all the aspects, both good and bad (mostly good though) of this fantastic cheat.
-Invincibility
This cheat gives you the best of both observer mode and regular mode. Invincibilty originates from the observer's side of the family. Like an observer, rockets, grenades, nails, bullet spray, and people will go right through you, and will not do any damage to you in any case.
-Invisibility
Another feature from observer mode, you can't be seen, not even your eyes. However, due to Team Fortress's ignorance, people can still see you bleed if you become infected, see the flash when you call medic, and hear you when you jump or shoot. When you shoot, rockets or grenades or nails or whatever will come flying out of thin air from the other player's perspectives. They will see the bullet spray or the axe spray from your weapons on the walls as well.
-Flight
As an observer, you can fly by holding attack. As a ghost, you will both fly and fire your weapon by pushing attack. This can be combersome when trying to attack, because you are constantly being pulled when you fire, but it helps to be able to fly anywhere. I suggest using the axe when flying, so you don't waste ammo. If you did this cheat as a Floating Observer Class (step 3 above) then you will always be floating, and holding attack is the best way to move around. One downside of this is that the Heavy Weapons Guy, who must be firmly on the ground, standing still, cannot use this
cheat because the act of his firing causes him to move, and his gun won't shoot. Nuts.
-Team Kills
You can kill anybody in the game, from any team. No one is safe.
-Anonymity
This is perhaps the most unexplainable aspect of the cheat. For some reason, whenever you kill someone, it says they were killed by a person with no name, instead of the name you're using. ie: QuakeVictim rides 's rocket
this makes you virtually undetectable.
-Freedom of Choice
As an observer, the server doesn't give a damn about what color or team you are. This makes it very easy to change your color and team to match everyone else so you will be undetectable, or you can stand out in the crowd by making your name something odd, such as Team Anus.
-Disease
Ghosts tend to pick up disease quite easily, and can spread it throughout the server in little time. Or, if you are a medic, you can do the damage yourself. This is the same as the observer infection cheat described in another section.
-Ammo
You cannot pick up ammo boxes as a ghost, but don't despair! The bumbling Team Fortress creators have left a door open for us! You can raid dispensers from either team just as you would use dispensers in normal Team Fortress, and quite easily I might add. However, when you use a dispenser, it shows "Enemy's are using your dispenser!" on the screen of the engineer who created it. They usually blow it up at this point, so be sure to get the goods fast. Of course, the explosion won't do anything to you. This is the only way to resupply your ammo, so you do end up using your basic weapon (the axe) a lot.
-Shadow People
An interesting side effect to this cheat is the Shadow People. These are people who, for some perplexing reason, have lost their skin, and are completely black. It seems to be just random people throughout the server, and it makes it a little difficult to spot them. I'm reminded of a misconcieved episode of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark.
-Transparent Doors and Elevators
Another odd effect of being a ghost is that sometimes, doors and elevators areinvisible. I'm not sure why this is, but it's sometimes helpful when you want to seewho's in a room. It's a little frustrating when you first realize it, because you're trying to walk through a door and you keep getting pulled back through.
-Frags
Any and all frags you get are credited to 's rocket or 's nailgun, but the actual points go to you. Interesting how that works out.
-Stats
The frag list will start out blank in ghost mode, but people will appear when they get fragged or frag someone.
Ghost Mode is probably the most fun that I've had with a cheat. It screws up the game more than any before. It can easily turn the tides of any game with just one person cheating, let alone two or three or more. After releasing this cheat on my page, I'm sure the whole world will soon learn of it, and eventually Team Fortress will get off their lazy asses to fix it. So USE IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! Tell everyone you know, before it's gone!
There are so many odd aspects to this cheat. Why does skins, typed at that exact moment, turn you into an observing class? Why are the doors and elevators invisible? Why are there shadow people? Why do your kills register to a person without a name? I'm willing to bet that there is more out there to this cheat. Keep me posted guys.
When I first found the cheat (I discovered it myself, nobody told me), I realized that this what it, the promised land of cheating! I knew that putting it on my page would eventually be the cause of its destruction, so if I wanted to use this as much as I could, it would be best for me to keep it all to myself. But I remembered how much it sucked not knowing how people were cheating, and felt it absolutely neccessary to tell people. I hope you appreciate what I go through for you. :)
If you are having problems with this cheat, please re-read everything I wrote, and try it a few more times before emailing me. I just know I'm gonna get spammed with questions about this.
What is it:
Perhaps you've seen a corpse roaming around a level while you were playing team fortress. Perhaps you asked how this was done. Perhaps the bastard refused to tell you. Well, we're not quite so secretive.
How is it done:
Feign death by typing "feign" at console, or use the menus.
Another way to do this is using speed cheating, described in another section.
How does it help:
Its harder to hit a corpse, especially an active corpse. You can be invisible in shallow water. You can slide under the red lasers in the Rock level and probably some other low-clearence crevices.
What's the catch:
You can't strafe. Doesn't work on some servers that have speed checking UNLESS you have the kick protection file in the Add-on section to prevent being kicked for cheating with your speed.
What is it:
Feel a bit restricted as a sniper when your using autozoom and you can barely move? Think the heavy weapons guy should be able to run as fast as a scout while firing his gun like a madman? This cheat is for you.
How it is done:
First, you must have the
Kick and Color Protection. This allows you to cheat on servers that do speed checking (virtually all of them now). Then you need to make your keys turn on speeding whenever you move, because the server will continuously change it back. For example, bind uparrow "+forward; cl_forwardspeed 500" There is a file in the Kick and Color Protection that does all these binds, it is called hwguy.cfg. It will work for any class, though, it's just very handy for the heavy weapons guy.How does it help:
Gives you a little "edge" against your fellow players when you speed.
What's the catch:
The server will constantly scroll "Johnny_K has been kicked for cheating" even though you won't go anywhere. Makes it difficult to be covert.
Cheat #4:
Permanent Spy Disguise
Servers: 2.5
What is it:
A spy that can shoot while disguised (Credits to
Adam)How it is done:
Disguise both your skin and color.
How does it help:
People don't except much damage when there own team starts shooting them. Check out the Color Change cheat for a way for any class to disguise it's color on any server.
What's the catch:
You can still be killed.
Cheat #5:
Air Build
Servers: All
What is it:
Floating sentries, dispensers, and in the latest version, telepads.
How it is done:
On pre-2.6 final beta servers:
Push the key bound to special (or type special in console)
Any server:
Stand on a ledge or any high place with a low place below.
How does it help:
Floating sentries are a bitch to hit with grenades. With the second method you can really get sentries up there.
What's the catch:
Takes a while to build, sometimes hard to upgrade.
Cheat #6:
Det-6-Pack
Servers: 2.5 (maybe 2.6 final final)
What is it:
Here's a cheat I'm sure you'll all enjoy- placing multiple detpacks..
How it is done:
First of all, you need the
Kick and Color Protection file available below. This keeps you from being kicked off the server while doing the cheat, and is the backbone of the entire thing. To place multiple detpacks, you must be kicked from the server while setting a detpack. To do this, either bind a key to something that will get you kicked, such as bind w "color 1", or setup speed cheating: bind uparrow "+forward; cl_forwardspeed 500". Get yourself kicked while setting a detpack and then you'll have 3. Sorry about the misleading 6-pack title, but it sounds good.
How does it help:
Do you even NEED to ask? Multiple detpacks are fun fun fun, especially when you don't have to hang around setting them when you use speed cheating.
What's the catch:
It only lets you build about 3, though through some freak incident I once built 4.
Cheat #7:
Unlimited Frags
Servers: All
What is it:
What would you say if I told you it was possible, on the latest servers, to rack up frags at the rate of 2 per second? You'd probably call me a filthy liar. But what you don't realize is that it really is true. I have seen the promised land, and it is good.
How it is done:
Three people are needed to do this cheat. One needs to be a blue medic, one needs to be a red medic, and the third needs to be a red or blue spy. The entire trio meets in some out of the way place where they won't be bothered much. Under the stairs by
the water entrances in 2fort4 are good, as is behind the towers in well6.
Once assembled, the group begins by having both medics hack on the spy with their bioweapons. One will continuously infect him, and the other will continuously heal that infection. For each infection that is healed, that medic will receive one frag. This will build up very quickly. So if you had a red medic, a blue medic, and a red spy, the red medic would receive tons of frags. If the spy was blue, then the blue medic receives the frags. I recommend stopping once your frags reach 69.
I find it rather interesting that no one has told me about this cheat, I figured it out on my own. Whats more amazing is that it's survived to the 2.6 final final version. It such a logical cheat, once you know that healing an infected person gives you a frag, it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out how to take advantage of that.
How does it help:
One of the awesome things about this cheat is that it works on any server that gives the medic a frag for healing someone. I know that the 2.6 final final servers allow this. It's quite easy to get to the top of the frag list with this cheat, and could be helpful in clan battles.
What's the catch:
You need three people to do this cheat, and sometimes its hard to get a little privacy in a level without someone (from either team, mind you) interrupting your frag party.
It may be difficult for some people to find three people, especially since recruiting people right on the server makes your conversation public, and then the whole server knows your plan and will undoubtedly take great pleasure in ruining it. Its fairly easy for me to get three people, though, cause I have about a hundred other cheaters on my ICQ contact list and most of them would be glad to come cheat with me.
Only one of the three people get the frags, so you may want to switch characters occasionally to give everyone a fair shot.
The infecting medic has to be careful not to whack the spy to fast, or eventually he'll be killed. However, if you get a second healing medic, then I bet you could all whack away at top speed and have two people racking up frags.
An alternative to this that makes it much safer is to use an infecting observer instead of an infecting medic. Then you can do this cheat with only members of one team visible, and people won't kill you as often. Check out the
invisble outbreak section for how to become an infected observer
What is it:
Any class can permanently change its color to the other teams for easy infiltration. Now the spy's not the only one who can disguise.
How it is done:
Get the
Kick and Color Protection below. This allows you to change your color, and the server is unable to kick you off or change your color back (though it will continuously try). How does it help:
Surely anyone can see the benefits of any class being able to change colors and use thier weapons as normal.
What's the catch:
The server keeps scrolling that you were kicked for changing your color. Though it has no affect, it upset roaming server ops.
What is it:
This adds the ability of flight to any class in Team Fortress. It is actually the springboard for the Ghost Mode cheat.
How it is done:
When you are connecting to a server and you see the words "Checking Sounds...", enter the word "skins" at the console. When the game starts up, several things could be
happening. You want to be a floating observer. Keep reconnecting and typing skins until this is the case. Once you are a floating observer, pick your team and class, and you will stay a floating character.
How does it help:
You can fly across gaps, float up to hidden away places, etc.
What's the catch:
It's difficult to maneuver in this mode. It's a good idea to be a soldier or a pyro so that you can propell yourself around the room with rockets. I hope you guys appreciate the ass I had to kiss to get the person who knew this cheat to talk. He wanted me to give credit to the Quake Crips or something.
Perhaps the most lethal kind of cheat (and my personal favorite) is the add-on. These cheats must be downloaded as they modify parts of Quake. If you have any files like those that follow, please send them to the address below!
I have received a file through email that prevents a server from kicking you. Recently, I modified that file to keep the server from changing your color back after you modify it. Thanks to Tormentor for the color idea.
There are plenty of uses for this. One fun example is to bind speed changes to the arrow keys to make the hwguy capable of running as fast as the scout, including running while firing that big-ass gun of his. An example of how to do this is in this file,
hwguy.cfg. You put it in the quake\id1 directory, and type exec hwguy.cfg in the console. Also check out the Speed Cheating section. I suggest editing it and looking at the coding Quake uses if you don't already know. The add-on below helps on servers that do speed checking (just about all of them now) by preventing you from being kicked. The kick prevention works on all servers tried, but the speed altering only works on the older ones. (pre 2.6). The color protection works on all servers. It even has a special trick to let you place multiple detpacks, see the
Det-6-Pack cheat section for info how. I imagine it would work for any type of Quake World game, not just Team Fortress. The possibilities are endless. This file works because the "disconnect" command was changed to "disconneca" with a hex editor, and the "color" command was changed to "coloa". If you want to use the disconnect command now, you have to type "disconneca", or just "dis" and then push tab to complete the command. Same goes fot the color command.
If you discover other creative ways to use this file, email me (address below). There are other cheats on this page that rely on this file, like
Color Change. Extra special thanks to TRiGGa for the first file.Download this file and extract it to your Quake directory to use it (I suggest making a backup of your old qwcl file in case you want to go back.)
Note: Those of you who formerly had only the Kick Protection will need to re-download the file to get both kick and color protection. I've also added a GL version, though since I am not a millionare, I have not tested it.
Download
QWCL.ZIP : 252 kbExtract either file into your quake directory and execute it to use it.
These two files give superior control to the sniper scope, as well as allow any class to use the same type of zoom in method that the sniper is endowed with. Both work by allowing you to zoom in and out in varying degrees.
First is QScope.scr. With this file, you push (') to zoom in an interval and (;) to zoom out. Also, ( [ ) and ( ] ) will zoom you completely in or out.
Second, and my preferred of the two, is ZScope.scr, a modified version of QScope. With ZScope you use the same keys as above, but rather than zoom you in right when you push them, it will cause you to zoom upon pressing the right mouse button, and zoom out when it is released. Very handy.
Both of these files need to go into the QUAKE\ID1 directory, and are initiated by entering the console and type EXEC QSCOPE.SCR (or ZSCOPE.SCR depending on which you prefer of the two).
Download QSCOPE.SCR : 4kb
Download ZSCOPE.SCR : 5kb
This file has a large number of cool effects that can be quite helpful in a game of TF:
* Sniper crosses glow - lets you light up any dark place just by aiming there and makes other snipers visible.
rotating.
You can just download this cheat and use it, but in case you want to try some modifications of your own, I will describe how this cheat was done.
Get a packing utility and open the pak file that contains the file you want to modify. Here is a good
paking editor. Extract the file, then open it up using a mdl editor program.. qmel970608.zip is a good mdl editor. Once the file is opened up, modify the mdl properties (click the hand holding a paper in Qmel970608) to make it have a smoke trail so that it will glow like a rocket. You can also modify it other ways so that it bleeds, drips green goo, etc.
If you modify the sniper sight after extracting it from pak0.pak from the quake\fortress\ directory you can alter it so that it will light up wherever it points by turning on rocket smoke trails. The filename is cross1.mdl. Try other things too, like making grenades, sentries, detpacks, or people glow so they are more visible. Lots of possibilitis.
Once you finish editing it, be sure that the new version goes back into the pak file. The pak
editor I have linked does this quite well, just double click on the pak to open it in qme970608, edit it, and close qme and it will automatically put it back in.
One neat feature of this is that it will only affect your game, it works on ANY quake game running on ANY version server, and is undetectable by the server.
To install The Glow, get the file below and extract iit into your quake\fortress directory. Extra thanks to
Joe for this amazing add on.Note:
Some people were having a problem getting this to work. Note that if you do not have a pak1.pak file in your quake\fortress, the pak2.pak file that you extract to quake\fortress needs to be renamed to pak1.pak. If you do not have a pak0.pak in that directory, then it needs to be pak0.pak. The logic is that the the pak files must go in order, you cannot have pak0.pak, pak1.pak, and then pak3.pak. I hope this clears things up.Download
pak2.zip: 575kbHere it is, the file they didn't want you to have, they showed you but they wouldn't give it to
you, the map hack of 2fort4! This file opens up many spaces in the map to allow you to see enemys through walls. Snipers no longer have to guess if another sniper is waiting to shot them as soon as they poke their head out the side of the blockade, now they can see right thorugh the wall! Thanks to EvilGhost[Ghst] and his
Team Fortress Cheating page for this file! Check out his other files here, and see more screen shots of the map hack.Download maphack.zip (424 kb)
The following tips are not exactly cheats, but they are little mistakes in the TF code. True, they don't help anybody, but they sure piss people off, and that makes it all worth while.
This nasty little bug lets you crash nearly any server. When you're in observer mode and are making the choice of what team to pick, go into the console and type "kill". Then type a class name (i.e. "medic"), respawn, and fire. A BAD PHYSICS ERROR then sends the server crashing into the ground. Not very nice, but enjoyable none the less. Perhaps with a little finesse one could find a way to turn this bug into a cheat. It doesn't seem to work on 2.6 final final, but all others I have had success with. I discovered this one myself.
As an engineer, there are plenty of fun little things to do with sentries that really annoy people. Go up to a friendly sentry gun and hit it with your spanner. If you want, you can upgrade it for them, but I'm guessing you'll do like I do and dismantle it. Another trick is to build a sentry on an elevator, which will prevent people from going up it (most notably the elevator in 2fort4).
This is one of my favorite cheats. Its relatively simple and freaks people out. I don't blame them, I think I would be a little disturbed if I saw a dead body drifting merrily through the air.
While an observer, type +attack in the console.
Type kill in the console.
The screen is sideways when you die, so you could do like I do and turn your monitor sideways to compensate. This turns my screen purple for some God forsaken reason, though. It's quite amusing to watch peoples reactions, and really quite harmless, unless someone shoots a rocket at you and kills themselves.
Annoyance #4:
As a spy, feign in a hallway that people use often (like the hallway to the upper respawn room in 2fort4). Your team can't get by and they get, to put it nicely, upset. What fun. Two spys working together in the same level can block wide hallways. More fun.
Another trick that is really the opposite to this prevents a spy that has feigned from getting up. If you notice a feigned spy and you are a demoman, stand on top of him and put a few pipebombs on top of him. This will keep him pinned to the ground, as long as they don't blow up.
I knew that there was a cheat or two left in the newest version of team fortress, and this is it! This cheat has quickly become one of my favorites of all of them, and it's all thanks to my friend and yours,
Slayer.Through some great incompetnce on the part of the team fortress creators, observers were left with the ability to be infected by diseased people, as well as to infect other people. Thanks to their general stupidity, we are able to madden people on a server to the brink of insanity.
The easiest way to do this is to choose the invisible option of observer mode when prompted to select your team. You do this by pushing '8' instead of choosing a team number. This will remove the menu from your screen, making it a little easier to see. If a server is set to auto team mode, you can often get to observer mode by just repeatedly pushing 8 upon connecting. If this doesn't work, you can still do the cheat, you'll just have a menu in your face.
Next comes the hard part. You must locate an infected person and stand next to him until you see "You have been infected by (whoever)!". This is sometimes quite difficult to do, so sometimes I recruit a medic to go around infecting people so that I can get infected.
Once you are infected, the real fun begins. Simply stand next to a person and they get the disease, and the disease stays with them until they die (which is often suicide), or they get healed be a medic. If they happen to get healed by a medic, it isn't difficult to infect them again. I enjoy infecting someone who isn't near anyone at all, such as someone guarding the flag, and watch them shoot wildly for their elusive infector.
However, you can only infect people that are on the same team as the person who infected you. So if you get infected by a red sniper, you can only infect other red players. If you try to infect a blue player, it will say you infected them, but it will not actually give them a disease (another stupidity of the team fortress crew). However, I have heard a report from
Amy that it is possible to infect both teams by getting a second infection from the other team. I have not had success with this.An alternative to this method is to become a flying corpse instead of an observer, so that people could see you as a flying, infecting corpse. Wouldn't that by fun. I haven't tried that though, and it probably wouldn't work, but its worth a try. See the
flying corpse annoyance for information on how to do that. When you infect a person, it says "You were infected by (your name here)!", so they can tell you are infecting them. You can also see an infected observer by the blood that spurts out of him due to his infection. Isn't that nice.
I've had great success with this cheat on 2.6 final final, but haven't tested it much on any other version.
The observer is supposed to not be able to affect the game, but believe me, there are plenty of ways to be an asshole. The
invisible outbreak is the best example of this, but there are some other fun things to do:Saveme!
: You can scream quite loudly as an observer, and medic can hear you, and I believe see the flash that the saveme command makes. Type saveme in the console to call for a medic. You can also put words into people's mouths like this, like onw time I yelled in a room with two medics and they went and started healing each other.Dispensers
: Everyone is an enemy to you in observer mode, and if you go up to a dispenser, it will say "Enemies are using your dispenser!" on the engineer's screen who made it. Doesn't take much more then that for them to detonate it. Works on 2.6 final finalPipe Bombs
: When people walk on pipebombs, it makes a nice little noise. Observers make this same noise, and will cause a jumpy demoman to detonate. This concludes our asshole lesson for the day.
When I first saw this trick done I just about wet myself. This annoyance traps a player inside the elevator on 2fort4. You do this by pushing them when they are on the RED BASE elevator on 2fort4 when you are on with them. They'll get their asses stuck in the elevator, and a funnier spectacle I can not recall. Thanks to
DarthVeda for this one. If you get them stuck right at the top, they won't take any damage, and will just be stuck there. If they get stuck somewhere in the middle, the elevator will be ripping them apart, and they'll die eventually. However, I like to be a medic and keep them alive for some time. Eventually they say "Just let me die dude", but I can't bare to lose a patient. If you'll look to your left you'll see me giving some scout a hard time.
There's no more alert for the Ultimate Cheat, cause I found it. :)
Ther are some odd reports of the possiblity of building many sentries (in a recent version of TF), and building a sentry that will stay on a guys head. ??
If ever you see someone doing some kind of wonderous cheat that isn't on this page, the best way to go about learning it is to go to the console, type 'spectator 1', and reconnect. This will allow you to watch them directly, and possibly learn their secret. If the server doesn't let you spectate, then just do regular observer mode.
