-------------------------------------- ICQ Chat Save file Started on Mon Apr 20 23:08:46 1998 -------------------------------------- <&PALchat1> Hi folks Hello to all Was beginning to worry about you, Sue hi I Sue! I need to grab my glasses. brb <&PALchat1> Yeah I forgot all about this until about an hour ago, and had to finish something up ok override colorwhat is supposed to be checked marked? <&PALchat1> Ok, could we please do without the horn tonight Who is honking? Hi All! <&PALchat1> Bec, Auto color off and override on Hi Lady! Gosh, Lynne - I just can't every hide from you. hi...finally made it Great thanks Hello folks. Sue, there's a PAL on my ICQ list who's not in here. How do we get her in here? no you can't! :) Hello Chris Maggie - just grab her name and drag her in. <&PALchat1> Just drag her from your list to the chat window Maggie hey everyone Sue - How many will be allowed in here? Jude will be coming along a little later Hi Penny Hi Cathy Hello Everyone Hi Beccas <&PALchat1> There's no limit, unless you want me to stop accepting people Wow! I'm amazed at the turnout already! Anna is coming I think HI Debbie Hi Chris I'm just afraid Maggie and I will not be able to keep up. But..hey..Maggie can handle it. Hi Everyone The more people, the merrier! LOL! Right, Dar. As long as I only have to deal with ONE question at a time, I will try to maintain. Hello Anna <&PALchat1> You guys will be fine Hi Beccas I'd like to start of with a question to everyone here..... As a lot of you may or may not know...Maggie and I used to lead a topic on Prodigy covering Marketing your crafts so we're kind of used to harassing each other How many of you ARE already marketing your PA creations? Which one is Maggie? (Darleen's always been a harasser!) Hi Julie Maggie...I am hi all! am I late? ok great thanks Thanks, Pepper <&PALchat1> NOt me ... yet <---gonna ask maggie LOTS of questions Thanks Penny! are we supposed to have PA open? Ooh! I gotta question! Hi Sara No. on opening PA, we're not going to be talking PA at all. How many of you want to market your PA creations but don't know how to begin? ME Me Maggie! me I'm not seeing everyone on here can someone tell me how to change it? ME Great! me Hi everybody <&PALchat1> Knight's.... try checking override format and unchecking auto color Hi ho Well, someone needs to throw out questions here if we're going to get started. Who's first? I was wondering how to "begin" this chat, and mentioned to Darleen that it might be helpful if we told you how WE got started. Me! Yes, no? <&PALchat1> Yes, yes! Yes Maggie sure yes Okay, when we're trying to sell stuff, do we yell "Show me the money!" Thanks Sue Let Chris ask her question first, so she doesn't forget. hi Sandy! I got you here! Thanks, am ready now. Ok, Chris - let's hear it Good question, Chris. Take it away, Darleen! I think she just did Maggie. LOL How do you price stuff? "Show me the money!" Money up front for the order is her question Good Q. Beccas I think it depends on the particular customer, but my experience is AT LEAST a deposit. Thanks I don't get money up front. So far, I have never had a problem...oh wait, there is someone who still owes me $3.00. Your welcome, eh. I've been "burned" just once by someone I thought was "good for the money" and I was stuck with her personalized order. <&PALchat1> How much do you ask for upfront Maggie? How do you go about getting started - your first order or contact? Depends on the job. If it's say personal business cards, I get the design fee up front. I have also learned that if I am doing a big job with designing involved, I ask for a deposit up front. I've been stuck with doing a lot of designing and then nothing happening. <&PALchat1> Teapot, even with personalized items, you don't get anything upfront? Definitely get any design fees UP FRONT! Thanks a bunch, Julie. So how do you price what you are going to sell is there a formula or anything? how much to you charge for design fee Yes, Design fees up front if I don't personally know the person very well. If no more questions right now, I'll tell you all how I got started with selling my stuff. I live in small community and I've never been paid "up front" and I've never been burned. I charge $25.00 or $15.00, depending on the job And answer Penny's question later! Great Same charge for me. Give us an example of the type of jobs. First of all, I am NOT a salesperson. The thought of asking anyone to buy ANYTHING from me makes me sick! LOL Like candy bar wrappers how would you price them? It never occurred to me to sell my PA stuff when I started with PA. I just made stuff for gifts..... ....then I went to my first PA convention, in Dallas, and took a bunch of my "stuff" for a show & tell..... <&PALchat1> That's good to hear Maggie, I can't stand salespeople! Where do you find display supplies, like card racks or holders, and the cellophane, plastic that goes over acards that you see in the stores? ....all the PALs who saw the stuff kept telling me, "You should really be SELLING this stuff!"..... Please hold questions until Maggie finishes. Thanks I finally started showing some of my stuff around the office where I work, and people started asking me to make them stuff, so I had to come up witha price list.... I did that, then put together a little catalog of some of the things I designed at that time..... ....like business cards and other easy stuff.... ....and that's how I started. After that, people bought things and showed them to their friends, and their friends called to order..... ....and little by little, I started getting braver, and trying new creations with PA...... and you charge 15 or 25? 5 what? ....and that's how my "product" line grew. One really GREAT word of mouth thing I started selling early on..... .....was personalized (with photo) birthday party invitations for kids' parties....... ....along with party favors. I put my business info on the back, and got all SORTS of business from that.... what kind of party favors .....I also gave the person giving the birthday party a bunch of my busines cards. How much did you charge for the invitations? Party favors I made were candy wraps, games, party hats, etc. Hi All ! I have to find my price list to give you specific prices. Hello to All Dar.....you wanna take over here and tell how you got started,a nd I'll look for my price list. Maggie, Darleen...may I butt in a moment? You've got the floor Pepper hello hello One of the items that Maggie and I recommend is having a portfolio of items that you create with you at all times. Great idea. complete with prices ? ok...i think it is important to consider what kind of "income area" you live in...and then adjust the prices accordingly. Do you use a book as a portfolio? Yes - with prices. I am continuously adding and subtracting from my portfolio Pepper is exactly right! Depends on where you live how you price. I have a binder that I use with the plastic sleeves in it What do you have in your porfolio? For Example? dkkat is Vail from Texas ya 'll and I sell my products quite successfully What about a 3 ringed binder wiht see through pages..top loading..you could change at any time I have a binder, plus I have a "samples box" of actual products. Jude lives in high income area and sells her 1/4 cards for $1.75 and I live in lower to mid class income area and sell mine for $1.25 dkkat, feel free to join us in answering questions! I have samples of business cards, notecards, etc. ANything that I make and that is included in my catalog. I'm sure you have lots of things that you make that are terrific and could be displayed in a portfolio Ok, but where can you go to get started if you don't work? Lou...that is what I use i.e. 3 ringed binder, works good for me if I may? <&PALchat1> Ok, for those of you that are already selling stuff.... do you have a "price list" or do you price each job individially? Do party invitations for friends, Sara. Word of mouth advertising works Sara - Just start hitting the doors of businesses. Gift shops are good ones to start with. I put a sample (marked sample) on bulletin boards in laundrymats, restaurants, beauty shops i have an "average" price list to start with and then customers and I go from there Sara, how about local craft show etc. Ok, and I belong to a Newcomers Club here. Another good "marketing tool" is a laminated sign with a bunch of tear-off business cards (printed on paper), that you can post in laundry mats, grocery stores, apts., etc. dkkat - that has never worked for me. Glad it's worked for you. <&PALchat1> If someone has J&J on thier list, could you please drag her in. I can't seem to get her in. I also have a portfolio of items that I make, but I use cd holders for the small items clear plastic and go into a 3 ring binder? That's another good point: something may work great for one PAL as far as getting customers, but not for another PAL. Just depends on your area. So if you sell a 1/4 fold card for $1.75 do you still charge a set-up fee? All-in-all, my best selling method has been word of mouth. You can see, that a lot depends on where you live as to how to market and how pricing is made. Nothing is concrete. You try one thing and if it doesn't work, you try something else. I've never had to actually look for customers....they find me. I did some signs for business that had faded ones in their windows once and just said I made this for you and here is my business card for personal jobs I charge a $20 set-up fee...for cards in stores, no. I have several small stores in the area that are intrested in my cards but I need to know where to get display supplies, such as a card rack etc.? <&PALchat1> Jenny... I couldn't seem to get to you... sorry it took so long! I saw some card racks at Kelly Paper recently. let me get info on card rack... ThaNK you everyone that was trying to get me in.....no there must be a fault somewhere,,, I got some menu business from that. But I did not know how to really charge I found it was good starting my business off small and building (adding new PA type creations) as I got better and braver. <&PALchat1> Good Idea Bec knight's maiden think about this for a display piece...a shoe holder or one of those note holders with 18 folds in it I get racks free at work but, just have never gotten myself started so I could use them. Wood Factory PhoneOrder #1-800-842-9663 PhoneOrder #1-800-842-9663 PhoneOrder #1-800-842-9663 thanks Pepper, do you also know where to get the plastic covering that someplaces put over them to protect from getting dirty? Thats a good idea ..here Drug stores put out their old un-need racks and youcan pick up for free.. I never have sold greeting cards because didn't see any money in them for the time that goes into creating them. Darleen and Maggie how long you been doing this? 1-800-842-9663 Did any of you find yourself being too critical of your work in the beginning? I am forever finding flaws. oops...wood factory for # above Or try a Salvation Army I don't actually sell much in the way of PA creations anymore since I've started selling my disk designs. Yup I do I've been "legal" for 2 1/2 years". But I started selling about 2-1/2 years ago. <&PALchat1> Pepper, what was that number again? ;-) always I am my own worst critic :( Darleen and I started around the same time I haven't been able to find any old card racks because card companies "rent" them to stores. Who keeps honking? 1-800-842-9663 not me beccas glad im not the only one that is hearing that beccas I end up doing things over and over because I want them to be perfect so I probably end up in the hole. Will you be able to talk about copyright issues? Yes, the honking is very distracting. <&PALchat1> If the honking is distracting you, go to Other in the menu and uncheck sounds. Do you have artistic backgrounds? I don't consider myself artistic, but I think my work is improving. I have no artistic background. Just like to craft. I'm a legal secretary by profession. I only "discovered" PA 3 years ago. Those mega clipart CD-ROM packages are helpfull. these card racks revolve, made of wood, 3 slots each side, 4 sides in all, $24.95 They have tons of fonts, clipart and some have background pics as well. How about copyright problems? That sounds like just what I've been looking for :) Yeah what about copyright? I have a small amount of art background. Mostly just craft stuff done over the years. Combining it with comuters just made it perfect. I was a Credit Manager with AMD for ages before venturing out on my own here. but you can't use them all i.e. cd-rom pkgs Even if you have no artistic talents, there are loads of pre-designed things in PA that you can print and sell. Best bet is to design your own. Dar, you want to field copyright? native PA though, right? I don't make cards I do the badge a minute things and make bookmarks, stationary/envelopes, business cards, calendars, gift boxes (small), and napkin rings (inserts) plus placemats, recipe cards on and on but no greeting cards The copywrite problems are what led me into the direction of designing my own. I got tired of the restrictions. What copyright questions do we have? Get a camera, snap a bunch of pics and scan 'em in. why, no greeting cards? Greeting cards take a long time, and people don't wanna pay for your time. One item. yes, Darleen, I agree with that. Isn't there a place we can go in PA to see what is copyrighted? leave that to you professionals the greeting cards I don't do cards either. Yes, under the PA Help you will find a list of everything that is copyrighted I was considering having a stall at our local markets,,,lots of locals and tourists...wanted to show a range of what could be made....love the idea of personalised things...can anyone give me some hints on how to go about displaying and selling....shortcuts Im looking for... thanks I do notecards, but not greeting cards. I sell more greeting cards to friends than I do in stores I think greeting cards are a burden on the printer and perhaps too time consuming for large quantites. <&PALchat1> Maggie, are the notecards personalized? I like doing quantity things. More profit in it for all my efforts. With mothers day coming up...I thought it would be the perfect oppurtunity Yes, I personalize notecards. Judy Crandall does REAL well with greeting cards! What's the charge for mini candy wrappers mostly? Doing personalized items in craft booths is almost impossible unless you take orders. But, then you lose the people who buy on impulse Yup. she sure does...makes me "almost" jealous! lol What kind of printers do you have Maggie and Darlene? How long do they last you? See, it just depends on where you live. Some will do well with one thing, others do well withother things. what kind of biz license do you need? I know it varies from state to state-is there a basic Vendors permit? the best thing you can do, is a little of everything and see what goes. Epson Stylus 800. I just got it recently. Used to have an HP but had too many problems. I have an HP officejet pro 1150C and an HP 820cse They are both workhorses Maggie, did you find your price list? Business licenses vary state to state. In AZ all that's required for a sole proprietorship is registration with Sec.of State. Thank you Pepper Do you ever have to figt the white edge? yup I have an Epson Color Stylus inkjet and a Brother HL 660 laser printer. In Calif, it costs me $150 a year for a license. If you are doing kids party invitations... do you charge the design fee and then so much per card? I have my price list, but I rather not spend a lot of time on prices, since it REALLY depends on your area of the country, and the size of your community. I started with a HP 550C and now have it and an HP1000C to make the large place mats mostly In MT all we use is our SS# - we don't have any sales tax therefor don't need tax # where would i call to find out about the permit? <&PALchat1> Do either of you have a wide carriage printer, and if so... has it increased your product line enough to justify it? Yes, I get a design fee, and a photo scanning fee, to set up the party invites. Here, I charge $6 for 1 doz. invites. accountant, bank I don't have a wide carriage printer. In texas we have to have the used-sales tax number in order to buy wholesale...but there is no charge for the license No, I don't have a large carriage and don't need it YET Yes, Penny do you have to have a permit just to sell alittle dkkat, where do we get that in Texas? So, it's inspiration to sell a lot. I have the 11 x17 capabilities and yes I use it Has anyone actually took their "project" to a commercial printer? Not I. you get it at your state offices sara State comptrollers office Sara For licenses, check with your city hall. Yes when I worked as a graphic designer. cost a bundle I gotta go.....Sue, could you send me a copy of this please? I did for a while chris, then discovered I can do it for less than the printers do Nope. They're too expensieve <&PALchat1> Somewhere along the line I heard about a $1 per page rule... I generally go by that and add for cutting time, and extras. I took an invitation I did one time to a local printer to see how much he would charge to do a similar invite. He said around $200. yes...the price was outrageous, Chris and told them it'd be cheaper for me to do it myself, and he said, it probably would. I sold my actual PA creations for about a year before concentrating my efforts towards doing my design disks for sale. <&PALchat1> Yes Lynne Thanks You! :) See ya all later..... $1 per page for what SUe....just anything that you print Now most of my "customers" for PA stuff are small business owners, like house painters, beauty shops, tea houses, etc. Rather than the individual person. See my problem is I used to design signs LARGE ones and now I want to do little jobs if that is understandable. I still do small jobs for coworkers and friends. Ouch! That's a load of dough.... when I was doing newsletters for businesses here, kinkos were charging me $1.10 per sheet if there was a drop of color on letter I'm having a LITTLE trouble keeping up. Has anyone asked a question yet that we haven't answered? You will make more money selling to businesses than private individuals. I can always count on my commercial accts Anyone from Canada here? <&PALchat1> Yes J&J... but you have to add a design fee and increase it for heavier paper, etc.... <&PALchat1> ok I have a question are you ready? Commercial accounts are definitely better money. I make most of my money buy doing buz cards for other crafters in the area. <&PALchat1> What do the pro's think of the $1 per page thing? I love getting the business card reprint orders. I'm ready Beccas ok this is my dillema I did some candybars for a friends daughters birthday and she took them to school and handed them out That works sometimes. But it depends on how graphic and color intense the page is. Also, if there is cutting involved, then you need to build that time into it. if I may say I charge a lot more than a $1 per page for my print ready proofs <&PALchat1> explain, print ready proofs? Well now I have 3 possible orders but I just don't know what to charge we go from low income to middle here Yesterday...I was trying to price placemats for the local Yacht Club..now that would just be a pic and some text then laminated...wouldnt take long to do....do you know by the time I rang around to find about colour copying and laminating it would cost $4.00 per mat.... and if I am doing all the printing, cutting, layouts, etc I charge a lot more for set up Beccas - send me a private email later and we'll go through the pricing for your items. ok thanks First, I don't sell the candy bars, just the wraps. But I know a lot of PAL sell the actual candy with the wrap. Id be interested in that, too, Teapot Oh no I would sell just the wrap cut of course can you get in trouble, say with hershey co when selling the bars with the wraps? Me too Teapot. Good question. I don't know. I just don't want to be responsible for selling food to people. For one thing, it is illegal to sell the candy unless you have a food license. <&PALchat1> BTW folks.... I hope none of you plan to Mail the candy to paying customers... especially in Florida. put me on your list too teapot , just for comparison sake if nothing else k? That answers that. Thanks, Dar. that's the way I feel, but my customers who own their own business only buy them that way. ya'll talkin bout the hershey bars? I may as well join the me too list Thanks yup Hershey bars or any other candy I don't deal with the bars themselves, I sell only the covers then ya needa know it's illegal to sell em without permission from teh candy co You're taking a chance, Pepper. If someone got sick and decided it was the candy, you would be responsible. I sometimes get an order from the township to design some kind of forms. And also I have designed there letterhead, envelopes, cemetery deeds and charged a fee for the design and give them 50 copies of each document. But now I have to try and figure out prices for more documents and don't know what to charge, any ideas? <&PALchat1> What about arranging for them to purchase the candy and you wrap it, has anyone done that? When you all get Dar's price list, just remember it's only a guideline. What kind of paper do you print on to make the mats? good point...i'll make that clear to them We covered that jasta I have the customer provide their own candy and I charge for the wrapping! there is a gal from OK that sells the covers and bars in a local craft shop and after a while the bars begin to start showing thru what with all the handling and all now back up to the list teapot...whatever it is, put me on it. What mats, Chris? Yes, that works - if they buy the candy. I was just going to print the initial one and then get the rest photo copied....it would not be worth while me printing 100.... Hey I just had the light bulb appear before me hershey tole me NO but the co that makes kit kats HB Reese Candy Co gave me written permission longs somewhers on the wrapper it says they made the candy I need the price list also I'm not sending a price list. Let me get that straight. I'm only going to help Beccas do some pricing on some items she has. But if they are color, it cost $1 per page here to copy!! oh shoot. :) LOL. oh sorry about that teapot I have a question... Go, Miyah I sell uncut sheets 15 to a page here to four or five business for 4 bucks a sheet no candy involved a 25 dollar intitial set up fee Everyone has to get a haircut right and they usually go to the same place what about making a small booklet of what you sell for customers to read? I am curious about the record keeping and all that legal stuff how do you keep it organized and what do you keep I have been selling my stuff for 3 years and most of my work has been with schools working with them on fund-raising projects. This has been a great source fo work for me. great idea beccas and it works too Boy, when Miyah asks a question, she asks a BIG one! LOL feeling like a sheep here Yes I am sorry as well..do not bother trying to send to me..I thought you were talking about basic prices I use Quickbooks and have for 2 years now. My tax man loves it. :-) start with the initial inventory of what you have add and subtract as you go And do you get those licences & permits before you even get started? yes sara I did I got two of my companys from the lady at the post office I made some candys for thank you's cuz they gimmee free box space for kards for Kids I'm just now converting to QuickBook myself. I use Quickbooks too and love it! Isn't that expensive? then you can buy wholesale and save on tax monies as well <&PALchat1> OK, how does it work when you are going to use stuff you have already once you become "legal"? My Quicken programs came as a package deal with my new computer. I don't know what they sell for <&PALchat1> I'm working on getting the licences and permits currently. <&PALchat1> Quickbooks is around $100 for the latest version What are quickbooks? Mine came with my newest puter Quickbooks has a few packages. I have one that was about $80.00. It's a tax write off though. I think you can get Quickbooks at Sam's a little cheaper, but I have not looked lately. <&PALchat1> Sara, it's accounting software paper goods at paper places, big card shops have sales of off season stuff (paper as well) buy it for what they paid for it keystone is at least 2 xs the cost Looks like we have a lot of "watchers" in the room who haven't asked any questions. Accounting Software As far as previous inventory - it's a good reason to keep ALL receipts. Previous computer equip can be depreciated fro the time of purchase Everyone keeps asking mine before I can! when you buy at wholesale, you then can double (keystone) your product + add the cost of labor, etc Have you ever had a customer that kept changing their mind and what did you do about it? I had one customer like that, and it was a pain in the @#$@% I charged a setup fee <&PALchat1> ok, I have been keeping receipts. I have had ppl change their minds, but once they sign the agreement (very simple one) that's it I finally told that customer that my business had gotten so busy (which it had) that I wasn't going to be able to take any new orders from her. Yes, that's a problem, Beccas. You have to be firm with them and don't give them a lot of choices to confuse them. however recently I went to print out 500 items for a business, and they made a mistake in their telephone number what a trial Not a lot of choices is a REAL good tip! <&PALchat1> DKKat, did you explain photo ready proofs? ok not too many choices and get an agreement They do get overwhelmed. Darlene - how many choices - like 3 maybe? Get the design fee. My max is 3. photo ready proofs?? Depends on the type of business I do 3 business cards for $25 design/set up fee. If they don't like 'em, they get 3 new ones for another $25 Do you all sit down or talk on the phone before you meet them to get an idea? photo ready proofs are for businesses that want like over 500 copies of something and I then make print proofs that i take to a printer and they do the work from there Yes, 3 is good. I design about 3 and then give them to them for approval and tell them that they can interchange fonts and graphics. They ususally do the rest of the work for me. <&PALchat1> OIC... thanks On average - how long do you spend on designing something? (I realize it varies) but you mention design fee is usually $25. I have a question. Do you all deliver or do they come to your house to pick-up? I had one customer who bought the paper then the business Pays the printer and I get a check in the mail for the proof I charge $20 a page for proofs Most of my initial work with the customer has been by phone. On average, I can do the design in an hour or less. they come to my house to pick-up Both, Cathy. Mostly I deliever. Gets me out of here. <&PALchat1> I don't think I want people coming to my house Me either I deliver for extra fee Mine are usually picked up or I mail. <&PALchat1> For one thing,... it's in the boonies LOL I am with you on that not wanting ppl to come to my house ok I have another question ready? I'd rather deliver, too. I learned something the hardway - Don't let the customer sit down at the computer and pick out graphics!! I make "the rounds" so to speak once a week I always do printing hre though. Even 5000 postcards for UPS. I never use an outside source When I do 3 initial BC designs, I use different graphics and different fonts on all of them, then they can pick one thing from one design, a graphic from another, etc. I never use an outside source for printing either. Exactly what I do, Maggie <&PALchat1> About how much time do spend working up the three designs? Teapot , are your ink cost high? I can usually throw samples together within an hour I've only had a customer ask for a second set of 3 designs once. They usually thrilled with the first. Do you stamp Sample accross the item? What would keep them from copying it? Not bad. I usually run cartridges every 1,000 copies I don't give it to them, I show it to them. We meet in person for the proof sheet. <&PALchat1> Caro, I refill and it only costs be about 6 cents per color per refill. Old to PA or just old KC?LOL I refill my cartridges. I give them a color copy of the designs from my color copier I give them a freebie magnet of the BC in a presentation folder I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't make a decent profit. <&PALchat1> Do you guys refill, Maggie and Dar? you printer manuals (ahem you do all read? ) will tell you how many copies that your printer can handle per month per cartridge I always give freebies with every order too. I do not refill Customers like freebies. Do you have to spray these products? It did for me, because I was building the business buying new equipment and supplies. BUT, you have tax writeoffs. I have Epsons and they say NOT to refill these How much would you charge for business cards...Caro? I use both cold and hot lamination on most things especially the boxes, etc hahahahah justa yup Caro - all of them say to not refill. Now...profit on paper or profit to me? As far as Uncle Sam goes, I'm not making any profit. But that's what you want to do 25 set up 25 per 100 The IRS has a website where you can download their guide for small business owners like us. It's a useful brochure to have. I, for the time being, do NOT want to make a lot of money...I'm selling to help with year-end taxes until hubby can retire, then I'll work harder at it. LOL I've always had HP's. Love them. I have HP and love them, too <&PALchat1> Hmmmm... I'm not seeing justa... not even in my list I Love my Epson 600 and 800 and pro I love my HP but, sure like the print quality of the canon 7004. I've had my new HP1000C for 2 months now and am still on the orginal cartridges and I have probably printed over 2000 items Not sure if we've answered all the questions. It's hard to follow everything. Please ask again if you don't see an answer <&PALchat1> I only want to do it to keep myself in software and upgrades... and to avoid a real job :-) Do you have to spray any of these items you sell? I have a HP 682C and it won't do cardstock.Anyone else have this problem? If you wanting to start your own home business selling your PA stuff, my suggestion would be the FIRST thing you do is talk with an accountant or atty and see what's required in your state as far as permits/license. I use Glittera ma and Shimmer I don't like to spray anything except glitter occassionally Some of it runs without it. <&PALchat1> Oh, I went to the Chamber of Commerce and they have free counseling there... something to look into... hi, all! I spray UV on items that will be sitting in the sun. ie: pictures and clocks We're all moving to Oregon! UV? <&PALchat1> He told me everything I needed to do to get set up, what order, etc... I have a small craft room and spraying really is a nuisance what kind of spray is the UV? <&PALchat1> What's in Oregon? I cant find UV here in IL I go to the garage. I sometimes use an ink fixative spray, depending on the stock I print on. I found it at Michaels. It has a big UV onit. when I spray glitter, I go out to the porch. I don't have a garage lol Me too lori spraying outside is FUN in December, LOL! oh yeah right !!! lori hahahaha Great , We have a Michael 80 miles away One of the benefits of living in Calif. You can always spray outside. oh no spraying in summer with a bunch of kids next door is fun NOT I didn't mean to open a can of worms! <> I don't see what everyone is saying. Why is that? good for fishing sara lol I sprayed all my Christmas cards with glitterama. I was SO cold when i was done! When in doubt, justa, don't use it. <&PALchat1> That sometimes happens, Cat, especially in a large chat like this cathymc your background might be the same color as printing? Lori , SAME here!! Good thing we have PALs like Dar to design the graphics for us! Cathy - try a gray background. Iv'e found that works the best Ok Provos are good for resell what else for graphics can we use for resale? Can I please get a copy of this chat. Ithink I was on a list. There's a list of what you can and can't use in PA under their Help button how do you deal with embellishments? do you offer or wait to be asked about it and how about pricing <&PALchat1> ArtToday! All royalty free! Jan R's stuff too You betcha. That's why I started designing. Inclipz if you get a license from them. <&PALchat1> Anyone that wants a log of this chat, send me e-mail mesue@usa.net I personally have never been too good at embellishments, so I don't often do them I love Art Today! PAUC will not grant a license for their graphic packages but most of them are in Art Today. What do you mean ArtToday is rolaty free? yes, I love ArtToday! Art today is 17.95 per year I don't worry about it by the time I move graphics and morph em, they don't resemble anything anyone would claim anyhoo <&PALchat1> I can't remeber everyone that asks.... or you can save the buffer, under file -> Save Buffer. Yes - Art Today royalty free. how much is the license Cathy? OH cool I have that membership just did not know it does it say it somewhere? For Inclipz?? I think $25. really justa? where was that? How can a graphic be royalty free in Art Today if it is not in PAUC <&PALchat1> I have downloaded well over 3000 clips from ArtOday in the past three weeks... the best part about it is is all hand picked and I don't get all the junk that you get when you buy the supermega clipart packages. There is another place that sells beautiful graphics that can be used on stuff for sell - What happens if you become "legal" and don't get enough customers? I was wondering the same thing, blonde Art Today buys the rights then makes them royality free What do you mean, "what happens", Chris? And it says that on the web page? Hi Judy then chris you moves your feet and get out and mix and mingle try a chamber of commerce breakfast go to beauty shops talk you artisanship up to ppl How would PAUC know that you got it from ArtToday? <&PALchat1> Yes, Bec... go to the license agreement.... they ask that you place thier URL somewhere on the item. And another good question, blonde! you must show a profit 3 out of 5 years to be a business Cathy where is that place? Didn't show up on my screen. Hi Pepper, two chat windows opened up for me.. LOL As long as you can show that you have a membership with Art Today - you are OK - even if you let your membership expire. ok great thanks depends on the state caro in texas you don't have to do that oh...that's strange Okay..... anyone offers to do scanning? And how much do you charge per scan? HI JUDY!!! Marty - I can't remember - I will have to look for it. I will let you know. Hi Danna... Thats FEDERAL <&PALchat1> Where would you find out if your state is like that? i was told here in MT that as long as you can show you are working your business, there is no time limit. I charge $5.00 per scan - which requires clean up - usually I charge $1 per scan the comptroller's office &PALchat1 That's if there's no clean up I am lost - no time limit for what?? In MN you have to have a sales tax permit. I ran a ceramics shop in Texas for 14 years I charge $10 per scan.... LOL I charge $5 per scan Any discounts for lets say, 12 photos? I think I'm gonna have to raise my scan price! remember though, judy lives in high income area. lol you did caro so did I for 10 wow small world chris you can discount yourself out of business quicker than you got into business I also live in the heart of Silicon Valley which lets me have higher prices Caro, can you make your font bigger? WOW , am Duncan certified We are all going to move in with you Judy!! surre ! that's for sure! lol That would be great, I have always wanted a maid. hahahahah so am I caro or was small world Brownies for evryone <&PALchat1> I would think for scanning, just find out what places like kinkos charge... and undercut slightly... I have 12 pt right now My design fees are always separate from scan fees. Yup I made brownies and you guys clean up. sounds wonderful... ok 14 now , is that better? I just changed my background to white and found 5 more people here Jude! That's torture telling us you made brownies! Go away! jude is the only one I can't see I think and she is in dark purple? Thanks Sue. hahhahaah cathymc lol It's bigger, but I can hardly see it. With a black background I can't see you, and with grey i can't see teapot. :-( uncheck auto hi ya javanut Go to display and click override and you will see everyone. My background is aqua... I'm sitting here stuffing my mouth with pretzels when I have a juicy steak sitting in the fridge. click override in display hi kat <&PALchat1> Best bet is to use a background color other than the 16 in the drop down menu. Dang Mags , I'm hungry !! Me too! LOL OK, I see everyone, you all have the same color now, is that what it's supposed to do? Sounds like our marketing chat is leaving us. Any more questions before I go play? LOL Well, put the steak on the barby and share it with everyone here! ok I have some wilted cheetos you got it Lori <&PALchat1> I have a question..... Last call for questions made by Darleen! like javanut said go to display and then hit override mine went all black with white print real easy to see it would be neat to see prices for low, medium and high income areas of everything. I enjoyed tonight very much - very informative. Thanks! Goodnight! Wrapping up here so I can grill my steak! I have some t bones , need to pop them on tjhe grill <&PALchat1> would you two be willing to do this on a regular basis... say once a month? for what justa? Yes I have a catalog and have just updated it, as a matter of fact. I have used a catalog, yes I think the best way to figure prices is go to stores and see what they are charging there. Cathy is correct - Yes, I made it myself and so did Dar Call you print shops and check prices. Teapot , may I get a copy of your catalog? with PA - catalog? I have made it myself. Maggie made me buy a binding machine so now it's bound. Teapot, do you think a catalog is worthwhile? Dumb question, if it wasn't you probably wouldn't do it. YEah but they are bigger and can do bigger discounts Sell the catalog for $3, refundable with their first order of $20 or more. Mags , you too! hey ya'll digest this I sell the majority of my stuff in a flea market and make a good profit :) I went into CrackerBarrel resturant they have a country store lots of ideas and very expensive I charge $3.50 for the catalog. I just got asked to do 3 dozen invitations for a high school grad open house. We don't have markets around here Darlene - are you still sselling your book? I bought it last year. Good manual for marketing. what book? Anyone here created calendars? what book?! I sell to salons here I've been selling about 2-1/2 years. Dar too Yes I am still selling my book Me <&PALchat1> I have Chris, but I didn't sell them? I do calendars too I charge my mom $5 for personal calendar. LOL How come Sue? I sell in two crafts type shops and 1 floral.. I don't use a binding machine for my calendars I stack em and glue em I bought the Ibico Kombo What a deal! $5 A marketing book. Step in here Darlene. I've done calendars. I do them a bit different because I don't have a scanner, so I came up with an idea that didn't need photos. I use the Ibico binder also Hey I have the Ibico also <&PALchat1> Just haven't gotten around to it. Vail - what do you sell in your booth? Ah. I was going to ask for hints and tips. I have been approached by a funeral home for my poetry Yes - it is a booklet on how to start a craft/computer business and be succesful at it. hey, that's wonderful caro Darleen sells a marketing book full of info, and I sell a PA disk packet to make your own mail order catalog. hints and tips on what, calendars? Visit our web pages for more info. What is the going thing for Graphics lately like angels or what for selling in booths We're not here to sell, but to answer questions. chris I sell a lot of stuff....all of it has to be ordered except the boxes, and bags i'm finding that pansies sell well here in my area. Moose are the big thing here and frogs. what a combo judy. lol Vail - so you put items that must be ordered in your booth and make money?? Birdhouse things are still selling well here. Ok Guys , how about a list attached to this chat with your URL's ? Anything to do with birdhouses is a good seller. ok some local schools have like booths every 2 weeks and I was wondering what would sell Cardinals here cathymc I put "samples" marked samples in booth then have order blanks available yes http://pages.prodigy.net/teapot.designs/teapot.htm My website is: http://members.aol.com/azsoulsis/amainpg.htm Birds are good everywhere <&PALchat1> How many of you sell your creations thru a website, and do you get a lot of business that way? Beccas , a GOOD school thing is school mascot and team clockls judy and i are working on a website now I'm updating my web site as soon as this chat is over, so you might want to wait until tomorrow and check it. and pennants or banners too caro Great cause I am not a mom but my boss is and was thinking Maaaayyybbeeee I could get her to sell some of my stuff and I would give a percentage Great Pepper!! I don't sell via the net , no time ! to the school My website has been wonderful in getting me exposed. Also, customers are always giving it out to other people to look at, which spurs on more orders. Bec , good idea! Does anyone know of a cheap way to get a merchant account to offer credit cards to customers? ohhhhhhhhh teapot has been exposed!! (sorry, just couldn't let that get by) lol I've definitely had the most success with word-of-mouth advertising....customers showing my stuff to friends. I haven't really sold much yet, so I'm still learning what to charge peopl, LOL! Yeah charging is the crux of it all. LOL for me at least first things first get your license if necessary and then your business cards (make your own) Credit cards are too much hassle , I do personal accts with my salons You will, Lori - jsut keep at it. then hand them out If there are no more questions of me, I'm gonna sign off, ladies, and get back to my business. Thanks Maggie! Thanks Maggie thanks maggie Thanks Darlene!! Yup Thanks Maggie CLAP CLAP CLAP well, I don't have a web site yet, but I've sold a few things. Oh no...My phone went and I missed half of it....is anyone saving the chat you can get copy of this from PPT page, after Pat puts it up. I have this really neat girl who did my hair and I was wondering if I should for her Bday give her some of her own bCards thanks <&PALchat1> Yeah, Jenny... send me a request via e-mail mesue@usa.net I had made a Christian Mother Goose Rhyme Book....and paperdolls, little toys..etc I do cards, invitations, bus. cards, bus card magnets, calendars, & large candy wrappers. Think that would be a good idea Beccas. You never know who else's hair she does! <&PALchat1> I keep forgetting that Pat is putting the chats up now! my biggest disappointment were the santa claus letters I didn't do well with those at all I sold about 50 Santa Letters but I will definitely do them differently next year. What did you charge for them? I thought they were so cute. How will you do them Cathy? <&PALchat1> I have an idea for selling personalized wrappers for the HUGE candy bars (7oz). I will not make everything that goes in the package. so I make a coloring book now use announcement 5.0 and a lot of graphics that i put on b/w only I will do the letter and the reindeer food - everything else will be purchased from Orienta Trading. I never made any Santa packages to sell Bonnie Boyle does the Huge candy bars and does a lot of business with them! Good idea Cathy. What will you charge? I love the Oriental Trading <&PALchat1> for different occasions... with a poem on the front and a name... and then allowing up to 50 words for a personal message on the back... what do you think? I sold my Santa Letters for $12 - others sold them for $15 What is the idea for the 7 oz bar? Do you know what Bonnie charges for the huge candy bars? They sounds neat. I'm going to do the gift bags for 4 holidays....Val, Easter, Halloween, and Xmas..... That sounds neat Sounds like a good idea Sue. sounds good sandi Me too, had DH go buy a big hershey bar so i could measure the wrapper. Will you cold laminate? Sue I wasn't prepared to sell anything.....but could of sold dozens of them So will anyone send me a price list just for comparrision? $5 - Judy .... she has a corporate account <&PALchat1> Well, I'm hoping to get a laminator soon, yes they would be laminated Sounds like a good price on those big bars. Gives me another idea... Hot or cold Sue? I like the thin laminate that Cathy M sells you can use the iron and the paper is still flexible. <&PALchat1> blonde are you from Port Richey? I think that the big candy bars would be great for Valentine. I charged $10 @ for the little bags I put together.....could of gotten more. Just made them real cutesy with labels and raffia They sure would Cathy. <&PALchat1> I have one I made up for valentines day... now I need to make up some samples for other holidays, and birthdays. What do you put in them Sandi This is Danna in Carson City Sue - since you are new in town I would get reall friendly with the chamber people <&PALchat1> Oh, ok Mostly dollar store items....except for the book I would love to have a price list too - for comparison <&PALchat1> Yeah... I looked into joining the chamber and it is $200 per year... is that normal? Hey I wonder if I called the local chamber office and asked for a list of people you think they would give it to me? I have not idea! I had thought of it too - WOW - that is a lot. I thought the huge candy bars would be neat to do up for guys who want something special for a girlfriend gift, or to propose, stuff like that. that's about right check for single enrollment or business enrollement &Palchat1 a list of people who belong to the chamber? Bonnie is selling them to a mortgage company that is giving them to their customers when they close a deal! <&PALchat1> They are nice cuz you don't have to work in such a tiny space too they (the chamber) will take pics of your items and put it in their monthly review magazine <&PALchat1> Does Bonnie laminate them too? Yes, she does laminate! Laminating the wrappers makes a huge difference! I have an order to do the smaller (not the mini) for a wedding favor <&PALchat1> That's about what I was thinking I would charge... I also was gonna fiskar the two sides on mine Does everyone laminate the smaller ones? There are a lot of sites on the internet selling candy wrappers. Yeah there is business and people so I figured if I could get a book then I could send something to some of them. I lamiante my small ones. someone put a URL on the list for a web-site that sells the wrappers - GREAT IDEAS I like lamintating cause it gives that little ummmphhh It makes them look like a real wrapper plus it enhances the colors. <&PALchat1> ok Cat... so do you have kids in the school where you get most of your biz? I agree - except that it is extra expense and work for something that is more than not just going to get thrown in the trash Do you when you are doing personal candy bars remove the rapper? I always use coated paper on my candy wrappers and that really brings out the colors too. No - I don't remove the wrapper. me tooo Judy Cool I don't either Sue - most of my business is with school organizations needing fundraisers. The wrappers on the small ones are all one piece now so you really couldn't remove them. Hey I had a thought what about halloween when you are giving stuff out to kids make a mini wrapper and put your info on the back? <&PALchat1> Well, for the larger ones I can see whay you should laminate... they might want it for a keepsake, and the small ones might get handled a lot... also I find just wrapping them a lot of ink can come off on your hand (I get sweaty palms) hehehe Do you wholesale to them Cathy? Yes - I guess so. They buy from me - then resell it. Do they double your price? I don't think that they double it, but they do make a profit. Has anyone tried that yet? <&PALchat1> Cat, I guess I'm wondering how you got your foot in the door. Do you have kids in the school system? How do you all come up with a price for an item you are making for resale? Me - yes most stores do a 40% markup on items that they buy from individuals Thanks Beccas....got them all now It is hard deciding on prices. Cathy M you gave Halloween stuff out? Sue - find out who is over the PTA - No - I did not give Halloween stuff out. <&PALchat1> Has anyone put a disply up (to take custom orders) in a retail store? Do the stores usually ask for a comission? Find out who is over the band boosters - all those people. Hey I got nieces and Nephews you think I can find out? for gifts, I've done baby onesies with an iron-on transfer with a cow and text that says "Got Milk"... Then go talk with them. They are always looking for stuff to sell. I pkg. these in a small milk carton <&PALchat1> ok, thanks Cat stores that you display in (hard to find) will charge something called overhead and space rental usually a percentage And they are so cute.... That is a cute idea blonde! <&PALchat1> Whew... good thing I'm logging all these great ideas! If you are going to do it, you need to do it now because they are planning for next year. Do you use an actual milk carton or do you make your own blonde.....what a great idea.. I want to sell them to the local hospital gift shop but have no clue what price to put on them Cheerleaders is another good group to talk with. all of them have a sponsor. Hi Sue all sorry I'm ssooooo late <&PALchat1> I see... thanks DK But how do you price the stuff!!!!! OK - I was typing - I missed the milk carton idea. <&PALchat1> Hi Cheryl..... Dar and Maggie had to leave but we are satill going strong! yes, I use the actual carton - got brand new ones from the local dairy and permission to use them for resale Are you going to send the log to the list Bec - figure your cost and multiply time 3 or 4. <&PALchat1> That sounds adorable blonde! ok so paper and ink? How do I do the ink? Ink is hard to figure. Cathy does that apply to everything Just figure something and hope.... <&PALchat1> Cheryl, I will send it via e-mail or you can get it from the PPT page as soon as it's posted. Are there any good sites to figure pricing? Would appreciate it Sue thanks Cheryl - I ain't not expert here Pricing is the hardest thing I do. The onesies are about $2.50 + the transfer paper and ink. $12 seems like a lot to me! <&PALchat1> Send e-mail to mesue@usa.net or I won't remember who asked :-) What about the item you pay retail for to add you product to For ink Beccas.....they usually give you an idea of how many sheets you will for a cartridge.... <&PALchat1> Can you get more than one transfer per sheet for the onsies? if the manual on your printer says 5000 printed items a month before changing cartridge divide what you make by amount that can be done and come up with a figure to work with Yes, I get two transfers to a page Milk cartons - I missed it - tell me about them. I have read where using an color ink jet, it costs about 35 to 45 center per page.. I meant to say cents per page. <&PALchat1> I don't think $12 is too much I refill my ink and it is not costing me much now. Great thanks Vail I put baby onesies that have a transfer on them of a cow and "Got Milk" - pkg. in a small milk carton Ive started keeping a log on what I am printing to try and work out how much I am getting from a cartridge. If I want to sell to someone for resell - some of the places want to double your price Does anyone sell greeting cards, the two to a page kind.. I am curious what others charge? What is a onesies I see in computer magazines when the review printers they usually have a price per page listed..wonder if they would have archives of older printers ok so the book says 2000 per cartridge so divide that by what it would cost for a new one right? I am glad you asked that. I was wondering too! as far as ink is concerned I find that I do printing costs at about 2 cents a page based on how many items can be printed per cartridge for months useage Jude I have done that then you add the cost of the paper you are using to print items on What do you charge? I charge 1.75 per card and sells lots. BTW, the ones that I have made for gifts, I used "DOODLER" graphics - I have a friend who's daughter is designing me my very own COW I did 10 per package with 12 envys and charged 13 for it Where are you Jude? MN like the little care pkgs? costs 33 cents to make them I charge a dollar for each of them onesies are a one piece t and diaper cover thingy I sell more c ards than the drug store. LOL A onesie is a baby t-shirt that has snaps in the crotch. oH OK...I am with you now....we call them body suits... <&PALchat1> Well, at that price no wonder Jude! Ohhhh - I used some of those At the drug store they are 99 cents... Sleepers here Jen so you buy the "onesie"? <&PALchat1> are these personalized for $1.75? No... Vail what is the care package? Yes, at Wal-Mart Where in the manual is it about print ...how many...? Just cards for any occasion...I do them for birthdays, get well and sympathy.. etc. <&PALchat1> I see... still a good price... some Halmarks are $5.95 these days! the care pkg is that little bag of a penny, a string, a rubber band, a hug and kiss (by hershey), a marble and a card with the saying on it Ok found it.....dont think my printer is very viable.. Most store around here don't sell many of the 5.95 cards. several have 99 and less cards. what does the card say Vail? <&PALchat1> Before my computer days... I went to the drug store for Mothers days cards, and that was all I bought, my total was $15! dkkat, what do you sell your care package for? it tells you what each of the items stands for becca like a penny so you are never broke... etc I sell my care pkg for $1.00 + 17 cents tax That is so cute thanks Vail I sold snowman poop at the high school Christmas craft fair - after that, they showed up everywhere - nothing is scared!!! what is your bag made of Vail? I make those and sell them for 1.45 and the store collects the tax so I don't have to worry about it. You mean other people starting making them, Danna? You all have great places to sell :( YES!!!!!!!! martym I buy the little 2x3" jewelry bags for $.99 for 100 at hobby lobby I am very lucky with the store I sell in. Oh, plastic bags? lk. <&PALchat1> Not me Beccas... I'm new in town and don't know a soul! ok, not lk <&PALchat1> I figure on doing a lot of freebees to start out Yeah they have great bazzars to go to and all that here is what the saying is on care pkg I print it out on business card size What are freebees? Do you find that the best way to start....just so people can see what you do an eraser to make all those little mistakes disappear <&PALchat1> freebies... give away stuff a penny so you will never be completely broke Come on to my place Beccas...and we can go to bazaars... a marble for those days when you're sure you've lost all of yours Jen I would love to believe me an elastic to help you stretch beyond your current limits And a hug and a kiss for when you need it? a string to hold it all together when it seems to be falling apart and a hug and a kiss to remind you that someone cares for you !! <&PALchat1> Well, now there is a great way to get rid of this HUGE box of rubber bands that I have had for 8 years... LOL Do you zip lock bags Vail with your lable over it? yes beccas Me too Sue....LOL <&PALchat1> Thanks for the verse, Vail Yeah thanks a ton the care pkg was the first thing I ever made off of the pals lists When I do my baggie gifts I use a bag tag and put the verse on that. it was a freebie from several gals on the list and you sold them really well? oh am still selling them all the time Did you say that you sell them for $1.00? Did you just start selling them or gave them away to begin with I take a supply of them to beauty shop, and some more to flea market, and then about a doz to the laundrymat (has a supervisor to watch them) really that is so cute. I told my boss about the snowman poop and it sold well so now is her chance to help me out don't you think? I started selling them right away I sell them for secret pal gifts for sororities etc Oh wow I have a college in CR that I could try it How did you do it Vail did you just call someone or what? i guess I make about 100 a month on just the little care pkgs How do you go and approach these people....I dont have the guts Do you print Care Package on the label? <&PALchat1> Good question Cat ohohohoh a light bulb again it is mid term here how about that!!!!!!! for a great gift what kind of graphic do you use? I don't know how to answer those questions gals... I am just a very gregarious person and have been in sales all my life I change the graphic for the month that helps cathymc yes care pkg is on the label I am not a sales person and know nothing about it! Well even as a sales person you have to have a start right? cathymc the only question for a sales person is precisely stated thusly: is the any reason you would not want to have these items in your store for special gift giving? the=there So do you leave a sample? Or take it with you? read it carefully practice it with a smile and take orders I always leave a sample and it is marked sample ok? <&PALchat1> I got a cute thing from Pal Kay Hance once....
