Jean de Jarnat was a French Huguenot and came to America in late 1700 in the third of four ships sailing from England bringing French Protestant refugees to American shores. He settled in Gloucester County, Virginia, and requested naturalization on 18 Apr 1705.

Except for Ellenor, the above dates are dates of baptism rather than dates of birth. Ellenor was baptized on 20 Nov 1720. Elizabeth is not listed in the parish register, but the page for the year 1709 is torn out, and Elizabeth is said by her descendants to have been born that year.

After the death of her husband, Jean, Mary moved in with her daughter Eleanor McGehee in St. Patrick’s Parish, Prince Edward Co.; she died at their home. Her will is recorded in the Prince Edward County records (Will Book 1, page 76).

There are many records of the deJarnettes in the records of Henry and Shelby Counties.

In Dec of 1839, Elias was authorized to change the direction of the Macon’s Ferry-Boundston road". On 16 Jun 1847, he was licensed by the Police Board to:

. . . establish a ferry service across the Noxubee river at a place to be known as "Macon’s old ferry." The board stipulated that the ferry "be large enough to carry a large wagon and six horses at the same time," and the board further specified that Mr. Dejarnate "shall not try to keep anyone from fording the river under their own volition and at their own risk. At the next Board meeting, Samuel Kelly was allowed to start another ferry "far enough away from Dejarnate’s so that Kelly’s ferry boat will not come into contact with Dejarnate’s ferry."

John Swift’s father is burried in Abbeville, SC, or across the state line, in Toccor, GA. Levina (and presumably her husband, Elias) moved to Noxubee County, MS, around 1845.
