WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

As an Illinois resident, you are eligible for financial compensation if you are:

WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS?

It's necessary to meet two conditions:

1.Report the crime to the authorities within 72 hours and cooperate fully with law enforcement officers.

2.The victim did not contribute to his or her death by engaging in wrongful conduct or provocation.

Conditions for Compensation Payment

You may receive compensation for:

Compensation under this program is a secondary source of recovery and the applicant must first exhaust other remedies reasonably available, including but not limited to, private health or life insurance, Medicare and Public Aid.

Other limitations:

Total compensation may not exceed $25,000 per incident
No compensation for property loss or damage
No compensation for pain and suffering
(these can be persued in civil court)

HOW TO APPLY

Complete an Application for Compensation and return it to us within one year of the date of injury. We will forward a copy to the Court of Claims (COC) at the Secretary of State's office. To get a form, call or write the office listed below. Forms are also available from regional offices: Jim Ryan

INVESTIGATION OF APPLICANTS

Applicants must provide any and all information related to the crime to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). The agency will investigate and verify information contained in the application, and may request applicants to appear for a personal interview.

The OAG will conduct all inquires in strict confidence.

After completion of the investigation, a report is submitted to the COC. The Court may render a decision based on your application and the report, or order the claim set for hearing. The OAG will then mail to you a copy of the Court's decision.

The COC renders decisions on all compensation.

NOTICE: No fee may be charged to the applicant for the preparation and presentation of an
application before the Court of Claims. The applicant may, however be charged a reasonable
fee, determined by the Court of Claims, for representation at a hearing as provided for in this Act.
