Earthquake, 2:46am Saturday, October 16, 1999- I was awoken by rolling, soft, long shakes. Since I am TDY and therefore don't have a lot of paraphernalia, there was nothing to rattle, fall, crash, or break (i.e. make any noise). The large jiggle of my bed and apartment was completely silent. The silence was the creepy part. Half asleep, I didn't realize what was going on. Then I saw my bike, which is hung by hooks from the ceiling, swaying violently enough to wonder if the hooks were going to hold on to the bike.

After the shaking stopped, I got up and out to see if anybody else was stirred out of their apartment, or if any damage had occurred. There was no sign of anybody. Either they were all buried alive, or it didn't worry them enough to come outside. It was the latter.

I thought this was all pretty exciting and wanted to do it all again until about after 5 minutes, I realized that wasn't really an intelligent thought. Instead, I couldn't go back to sleep for an hour thinking what could have happened if it was the BIG one.

I watched the TV until it was reported that a 7.0 earthquake had struck the Mojave desert. I think the epicenter was about 70 miles away. Maybe somebody can confirm this.

Keep in mind, I live less than 10 miles from the San Andreas fault line. I frequently ride my mountainbike through the foothills right on the fault. There is lots of great local riding there, but wonder how good of a rider I'd have to be to stay up on a bike if the San Andreas fault decided to try to knock me down with an earthquake.
