Viruses
A computer virus is a program that can copy itself into another program and thereby multiply itself. While some viruses dont do any real harm to the computer like writing a stupid message on your screen on some famous persons birthday. Others can do some serious damage such as deleting all of your files or corrupting them in a way that they are rendered useless. Most of these computer viruses start as a computer prank. However, computer viruses have done millions of dollars worth of damage to computer systems.
How do computer viruses work? Computer viruses are often "contracted" while downloading software from suspect sites or computer bulletin boards. The other way to get one is from a floppy borrowed from a friend. On the web, commercial vendors take extra precautions not to accidentally include viruses in their software. I have never unintentionally received a virus from the Internet. You can find viruses on the Internet that people keep online for amusement or educational purposes get the picture?
There are usually four phases in the workings of a virus. The first is the infection, the second is the multiplication phase, this is where the virus multiplies itself. The third phase is one of dormancy. It appears that the virus has not done anything yet. This actually gives the virus a chance to spread to other hosts. The final phase is the destructive phase. In this phase the virus can mess up your screen or delete your entire file system.
Most viruses infect executable files like .com, .exe and more rarely .mnu, .ovl, .sys, and .prg files. When that file executes, the virus copies itself onto other files and then later once some time passes, inflict the damage. Others infect special tracks on a floppy or hard disk called the system or boot sector. Every time you do a directory they get activate and copy themselves. Some viruses are actually hybrids of both types. There are many thousands of viruses and each one has a different set of tricks up its sleeves. Some actually change themselves to evade detection. There is a good FAQ at http://www.virusafe.com/vcenter/whatav.html that does a pretty good job at describing all the different types of viruses in detail.
