Waste conscious behaviour, if widely adopted, offers significant community benefits including reduced waste and litter management costs and conservation of natural resources. Valuable pioneering work has been done by local Councils, community organisations and others in developing educational methods, materials, services and demonstration projects to promote waste conscious behaviour. However, much of this work is not achieving its full potential - it needs to be much more widely known and better used as a source of ideas. In this light, I am trying to resource Waste Wise Program which may offer substantial support to Regional Waste Management Groups, Councils and waste contractors in the planning and implementation of waste and litter education strategies for their communities. Fostering the knowledge and commitment
needed throughout the local community if waste and litter is to be minimised
takes careful planning. It also requires a sound grasp of the latest educational
methods and awareness of the educational materials, models and other resources
available. If each Council and waste contractor has to cover all these
aspects from scratch, this consumes resources that could otherwise be used
for implementation. The Waste Wise Program is specifically designed
to assist with this situation.
