SM791 Computer Laboratory (0-1-2)

Course objective

This course has a supportive role only; it endeavors to combine the essential knowledge concerning computer systems and the techniques underlying their application to managerial contexts. The aim of this course is to sensitize students to broad issues in information technology (IT) use by emphasizing the importance of developing computer use skills. This is an application-oriented course and students are expected to do extensive hand-on exercises. Note the L-T-P distribution. There are no "lectures" scheduled in this course. There are tutorials and practicals only. The set of assignments is provided to you in advance for you to familiarize yourself with the nature and scope of coverage. This semester the course consists of the modules shown below.

Modules

Cases and assignments

Introduction to PC hardware and software

This portion is going to be covered in class depending on the student profile. If the majority of students are familiar with the basic working of PCs, other computers and networks we will skip this portion and devote time to other topics. I am operating under the assumption that with each passing year, the need for this component of the course will diminish.

Introduction to computing infrastructure at IIT (Delhi)

The Computer Service Center (CSC) PCs, vt100s, Suns, Printing in the CSC, Different labs at IITD, Servers and the computer network at IITD, Software available in CSC, Management-related software at IIT (CASE tools and 4-GLs, Database environments, Internet browsers (not available yet), Modeling, Programming languages, Simulation, Spreadsheets and add-ons, Statistical analysis)
