Tribute to Dan
September 17, 2000
Jersey #13 retired!
Dan Marino was honored at halftime with a monster ceremony that included the retirement of his No. 13 jersey, induction into the team's Honor Roll and the unveiling of a life-sized statue that already stands outside Pro Player Stadium.
While touched by the proceedings, Marino also used the event as a platform to push wide receivers Mark Clayton and Mark Duper for induction into the team's honor roll.
"Hopefully, not only Mark Duper but Mark Clayton will have their names in the same end zone I'm going to be in," said Marino, who played with Clayton and Duper from 1983-92. "They deserve to be in the (Honor Roll). Hopefully, they will be."
Ex-Dolphins coach Don Shula also gave his endorsement to the Marks Brothers, who combined to catch 1,061 passes for 17,512 yards and 140 touchdowns.
"I'd love to see that, and I'd like to see them both go in there at the same time," Shula said. "I think it's only fitting they do. That's a lot of great memories and a lot of big plays."
Dolphins president Eddie Jones said Clayton and Duper once again would receive consideration when next year's Honor Roll inductees are discussed.
"They've gained serious consideration the last couple of times," said Jones, who participates in the selection process. "They're both deserving guys who've had great careers."
