The Refugees

When Saigaon fell and the Vietnamese who had worked with the U.S. government were frced to evacuate, the United States opened its doors to the refugees. It gave preference to uniting families and to relocation Vietnamese who had worked with U.S based companies or the U.S. government. More than 130,000 refugees came to the United States in the 1975 exodus.

The U.S. government felt responsible for these refugees, and few U.S. citizens protested relocating them here. Americans, still cought up in the anti_Communist cold war, sympathized with the Vietnamese as their country fell under the rule of Communist forces. The offered relocation services as well as money and jobs for the new immigrants.
