the amazing phenomenon of

REVERSE SPEECH

david oates made the discovery of reverse speech in the mid-1980s, and it has since proven a valuable tool in psychotherapy and lie detection. reversals of celebrities and alien abductees are all over the internet, revealing the contents of the speaker's subconcious mind on various levels. while it takes a while to get used to the choppy, sing-song nature of this hidden language, once one has grown accustomed to its nuances reversals are quite easy to pick out of a length of speech.

according to mr. oates, a well-trained reverse speech analyzer can pick out reversals every ten to twenty seconds in natural conversational speech, a bit more often when the speaker is under hypnosis, and a bit less often when the speaker is delivering a prepared and rehearsed speech. he says that reversals are formed from the tones and sounds of speech and not from the structure of the words themselves, so the same phrase when said by different people could get two different reversals. in music, however, due to the fact that it is a more precise form of speech, if the singer truly captures the nature of the song, he/she will come out with nearly the same reversals each time.

below are some samples of reversals i have found. the less clear ones are played in reverse in two or three speeds. unless otherwise noted, the first set of words is the forward and the next sequence is the reversal. for more reversals, see david oates's own website.

these first few are of some preachers my friend and i found on a local tv network, making a sad commentary on televangelism.

earth, sun, look at no one! [this particular guy says to look at no one quite a bit.]

these next few are from a woman who was silenced by the government after witnessing the roswell incident. these reversals show the fear and desparation she remembers as she retells her story.

well, goodnight [anticipating a beating]

i would never know who you are, i just know that i'd seen it.

no one ever said sh*t [scared to death of what they would do if she were to talk of her discovery]

my father said it was the son that seen it. [my best guess is she's either passing blame, naming jesus (the son) as a witness, or she literally has a son who saw what she saw]

and now as a grand finale i'd like to share a couple of reversals which caught celebrities with their psychological pants down.

i am not a crook...actually i'm just erect [the reversal actually occurred in the sentence after "i am not a crook" so i have placed it in the appropriate place chronologically for continuity. as you can hear, nixon's reverse speech reveals his true, uh, standing.]
