In order to get started, you need to get a KIT. Don't try to build one from scratch. It is a lot harder
than you think. I suggest the Lynxmotion Micromouse or Carpet Rover. They aren't real expensive,
but are still sophisticated. For assembly you will need:

1 soldering iron,                       2.99 (Yes 2.99-from Discount Electronics. Look in the links)

an assortment of screwdrivers,

solder,

Flux,

at least half of your brain dedicated to the project,
(Or at least the cerebrum)
basic knowledge of electronics or  somebody to show you the ropes of soldering. (Such as a big brother into r/c cars who knows how to
solder very well!)

The second part to getting into robotics is PROGRAMMING! Think about it. Your robot (Most likely.
If you did, You are very lucky!) probably won't come preprogrammed so YOU will have to give him
instructions. There are many places on the web that let you post your program on their web site so
it can be viewed by others. With most kits come a little book that gives you some help on how to
program your robot. Look at it, then try out your knowledge and create a simple program.
Let me know of your success and I will be happy for you.

Update!

The third part is batteries. You can get a very good deal from Mondo-tronics. You get a Quad Charger that includes 4 FREE AA BATTERIES! The cost is reduced many dollars if you order the Quad Charger you get the batteries with it, it saves you a bundle. The retailer Big Lots has a good deal on 9 v's for .48 cents. I have NOT been paid to say any of this. FYI. In my perspective, Since it would cost you the same to get it from Radio Shack, I would order if from Mondo-tronics.
Then you don't have to go to Radio Shack and get it seperately.
