I Am A Proud
Member Of:
Phenomenal Women Of The Web |
Caste
When I was young I read Rudyard Kipling.
I wondered about a small, confusing word.
Mowgli, disinherited by humanity,
Was a man without caste.
In my innocent mind I decided it was good.
Years later I learned the definition
Never change, never leave.
My capitalist knowledge was inadequate,
bereft of examples.
What was it like?
A professor said to me,
"The cards were stacked against those on the bottom."
At least they belonged.
A man without caste. How lonely he must have been.
Lindley Williamson, 3/99
