Evening of Roses
Erev shel shoshanim
Neytsena habus tan
Mor besamim ulevona
Le raglech miftan.
Evening, wind of roses,
Let us go out to the grove
Let me show you, rose of the morning,
The fragrances of the night.
Let me calm you, soothe you
This night is only darkness,
A world of enchantment
Let me show you the darkness.
Let me whisper you a song, secretly
A song of love
Let me lead you into the night
Roses unseen are as sweet, sweeter
Than those which wither in the sun.
Be thou a rose of the evening
When dark falls.
Embrace it with me, taste it
Let your head be filled with dew
Let me whisper you a song, secretly
A song of love.
Evening of roses, wind of you
Your mouth is a rose unto the night
Sun withers away the delicate
Beauty belongs to sustaining night.
Your mouth is a rose
I will pick it for myself.

Lindley Williamson
This poem is based on the song "Erev Shel Shoshanim," a traditional
Hebrew text set to beautiful music. The italicized phrase from the song is roughly
translated throughout the poem.
