Words

Somehow, when I set out to tell you
Just how much you mean to me,
The words never come out right.
They twist and turn and betray me
Into all types of stumbling, half-coherent idiocies
That I would give much to recall.

Words that flowed so smoothly from my silver-tongued pen
Are cranky, scrabbling for position in the
Sentences that from my hesitant mouth falter.

Only when I see you, wrapped safely in your arms,
Can I show you what I mean,
Not with words - so inadequate -
But with a long, sweet glance
That tells you my whole heart.
