Netware 5 does well, and most of the slowness achieved by using the X server interface can be mitigated by removing the 'startx' command from the Autoexec.NCF

Implementing and Securing Novell NetWare (4.x and 5.0)

My biggest recommendation is to stay on IPX/SPX for the moment. There are some large issues with running IP on your gateway, as well as IP for your servers. An example of this would be that any hacker will assume that you have an IP device, but few would assume that you have IPX devices as well. Making them have both protocols running increases the number of hurdles needed to hack, and could discourage the casual hacker. NDS for NT 2.0 is a great aid in securing the NT side of the house, and is especially effective in the already NW powered environments.
