Christian sources believe they are beings of pure spirit and light, emanating a love that is far beyond human experience. They are creatures of spirit, gifted with intellect and free will, superior to man.St Bridget (1303-1373) who experienced many heavenly visions, said that if a person should see an angel in all his beauty, the mortal would be so ravished with delight that he would die of love.
How do angels communicate?

There are 3 main ways of communication:
1. Audio - usually a buzzing noise or music before words are heard, either externally as if someone has spoken beside you, or sometimes heard "within" - as if the voice is speaking within your mind.
2. Dreams - angels can communicate through dreams. In our dream state we are closest to the parallel spirit world and dream encounters can take place over several nights. Communication this way often is to warn of dangers to the dreamer or other people, but can also be to reassure and soothe a troubled mortal.
3. Visual encounters - angels can appear as images and deliver messages in person. Sometimes the angel tries to fit in with the surroundings and looks like an ordinary person. Angels have been seen as nurses in hospitals, hitchhikers picked up that warn of dangers on a journey, and then suddenly disappear, and then there are the ones that want to be noticed - the ones that shine all over with a glow that hurts your eyes to look at them. Their eyes are full of light and their faces are innocent.
Deathbed angels
Many people talk of angels on their deathbed. They see visions of 2 angels, one shining brighter and standing closer to the person than the other. The closer, brighter angel is the Guardian Angel, ready to escort the dying mortal to a higher realm. The other "less bright" angel is the Angel of Death. The Angel of Death is the most gentle and sensitive angel within all creation. Those who have shared an encounter with this angel describe it as dark, very quiet, and not at all frightening or menacing. The Angel of Death must sumon the departed spirit into the care of the Guardian Angel so the journey to the "other side" can begin. The dying mortal feels a warmth from the Angels' light and a security that makes them want to draw closer to the peace and love they can sense.
Guardian angels

While Guardian angels can help humans even when they have not been asked, it is best if the person does ask for help. To communicate with your Guardian Angel you should think about them daily and become aware of your instinct and intuition, since this is often how the Guardian Angel communicates.
Angels will do all they can to help humans in their care, but they cannot act against man's free will. If a person wants angelic help, he will also have to strive to do what is right, including taking all possible care to be safe in difficult circumstances. People can deliberately move themselves out of the "angel safety zone" by taking stupid risks.
Angelic messages are always loving, positive and clear, even though they may be sobering. They do not leave the receiver with feelings of anxiety or unnamed fears, but with confidence and knowing from within that the message is right and true. If carrying out the message brings good in the life of the receiver and those around him, it came from the angels, and an angelic encounter will always leave the person changed for the better. The angels come when the time is right, not because they are summoned.
The most well-known means of actually seeking a guardian angel is the "vision quest" undertaken by some Native American tribes. In these societies, a standard part of the puberty rite is the quest for a "revelation" in the form of a dream or a vision from the spirit world. It is the hope that this revelation will inspire in a young person a sense of purpose or identity, or it may steer the seeker toward his adult vocation. These rituals sometimes involve treks into the wilderness where the seeker fasts and or engages in other activities likely to bring on visionary experiences.
Why do angels wear white robes and carry harps?
Angels are often pictured wearing white robes, halos, seated on white clouds and playing heavenly music on harps.
The christian influence is that Angels are singing God's praises - this tradition is why ranks of angels are often called "choirs of angels". Harps may have been chosen as the heavenly instrument because of the association between the Greek gods and the lyre, a harp-like musical instrument popular in ancient Greece.
What is a halo anyway?
The halo is often drawn around the heads of religious figures such as saints and angels. Artists tend to draw halos as thin circles of light that float over the subject's head, but they were traditionally drawn as disks of gold - meant to imply a sphere of light radiating in every direction from the figure's head. Halos symbolize holiness, innocence, and sometimes spiritual power.
