Veteran Holley leaves for Israel

Tony Holley

Veteran basketball player, Tony Holley has been released by the Manchester Giants, it was Wednesday (29 Nov).

The 32-year-old, who has been playing in the BBL for nine years – including the last two-and-a-half year at the Giants – is moving to Israel to play for Elizur Ashkelon.

Giants’ General Manager, Nick Montgomery, explained: “We have reluctantly agreed to release Tony from his playing contract. Given the start to the season that the Giants have had and all the injuries we have had, we thought we had finally got a full team together, so this has come as a bit of a bombshell.”

Holley was scouted by an Elizur Ashkelon agent during the Giants’ recent uni-ball trophy fixture with Milton Keynes and an approach was made for the player last week.

Montgomery continued, “There were discussions had between the club and Tony and his agent and it was eventually decided that it would be best for all if Tony left the Giants. We certainly didn’t want to re-sign Tony under duress. At the age of 32, Tony felt he had to do what was best for his career and we understand that and wish him well.”

Head Coach Andre Alleyne added: “Tony got a lucrative deal and he decided that it was the right move for him. I didn’t want to keep him if he didn’t want to stay. We have a good team and we are free of injuries now, so I think we will fine. We are still moving in the right direction.”

Giants have recently signed North Carolina graduate, Brian Reese, and with Julius Joseph, Brian Earl, Teva Johnson and Martin Gottfried all recovered from injury, the Giants are in good shape.
