Hands-On Laboratory Chemistry For Youngsters

How do you make an egg float in water? Is it magic?

1. Fill a glass of water from the sink in a kitchen.
2. Take a raw egg from the refrigerator and slowly drop it into water.
3. Observation - The egg sinks.
4. Why? The egg is heavier than water so it sinks. What does this mean? If you can measure the space that the egg occupies and weigh the egg then divide one by the other, this number is going to be greater than the number that you get when you take the space that the water is sitting in a glass and divide it by the weight of water.
And Finally...
5. Now, if one can make water heavier than the egg the egg is going to float when it is dropped in the water. One way to do this is dissolve enough table salt in the water to make it heavier. Because the salt dissolves completely in the water it is part of water. Now if you do the calculations in 4. the water is going to be heavier than the egg and the egg will float. Note, you need to add at least 3 tablespoons of salt or more to the glass of water (1 cup) for this to happen. You need to make sure the salt is dissolving completely in the water, and you need to keep on add the salt until the egg floats. This might require several tries, by testing the egg with each addition of salt.
