...or spending your college years nearby

Are you having trouble deciding whether to stay around here or go away for college? Many colleges and universities offer great programs, housing, and other “important” experiences. There are many pros to going away for college but that also comes along with many cons.

The out of state tuition can sometimes be doubled the cost of instate residency you would get if you went to a school in your home state. For example, say you went to Penn State Main Campus, not to far away but far enough, the tuition, room and board, and all that other good stuff is cheaper then if you went out of state.

Private university’s can cost $30,000 to $35,000 a year, in state universities and colleges can cost sometimes half then that. If you are one of the many people who get a scholarship then that will also help with you tuition but won’t take the problem away completely.

Some students experience depression, anxiety, and homesickness. You may not think you could experience any of this but you never know. Many people are used to having all their expenses paid for, not having to worried about living on there own.

When you’re away at college, you are basically living on your own. No curfew, no parents telling you when to do something, and what you can and cannot do. This is an advantage to going away to college. Some kids may not be able to handle this. They have structure and then all of sudden they are on their own and they go crazy, not literally.

You should choose a college or university that you are comfortable with. Do not choose a college because all your friends are going there, or that’s what your parents want, make sure it is what you want. You can go as far away from home as you would like, but make sure you feel comfortable and that you will be able to stay away from home for your college experience.

If you do decide to stick around you can always transfer to another college down the road. Leaving your options open will help you to better decide what you want to do with your life, you never know what can happen in the near future.

Staying around home for college might not be so bad, even though you think its torture. Living near home does have its advantages, saving tons of money, friends, you know where everything is so no asking for directions.

So next time you are thinking about staying around home or going away think of all the pros and cons of staying here and going away.
