April showers bring may flowers. The
month of April has brought more than just showers, it is considered
to be one of the most violent months of the year.
It is the two-year anniversary of the horrific shooting
at Columbine High School. That shooting is said to be the most violent
attack at a school ever. The people in Littleton, Co., and people
all over the world, will never forget that day, April 20, 1999.
The two shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold,
walked through the cafeteria and the library shooting whomever they
saw, killing one teacher and fellow classmates. Fifteen people were
killed on this dreadful day, including the two murderers.
This is not the first time weve seen such
a violent tragedy in America. Six years ago, on April 19, 1995,
Oklahoma City suffered a major disaster. There was a day care center
in the Murrah Federal Building, where many young children were dropped
off every morning on their parents way to work.
But on this day, a massive bomb exploded and the
nine-story building tumbled to the ground killing 168 people. This
was the worst terrorist attack ever to occur on U.S. soil.
It seems like only yesterday I heard about
this story, said sophomore Melissa Dettore. I cant
believe it was six years ago. But these are just two examples
of many tragedies that have occurred in April.
Within this past year there have been school shootings
in Pomona, Ca. Edinboro, Pa, Williamsport, Pa. and Prairie Grove,
Ar. Even the students at Neshaminy High School have experienced
a few scares.
On April 29, 1999, the students were evacuated to
the stadium because there was a bomb threat. The students sat in
the stadium for almost four hours, waiting to find out if the bomb
really existed. It didnt.
I couldnt believe it was happening to
us, said senior Rachel Kepner. It made everything that
was happening in the country seem so real and so close to home.
The weeks after Columbine brought many other scares.
Schools all over the nation were receiving bomb threats and many
kids were bringing guns to school. I remember a lot of people
saying that they were scared to come to school, said senior
Joe Aquaro. You never know whats going to happen, especially
after that incident.
Some people believe that this violence has been
triggered by the anniversary of Adolf Hitlers birthday, which
was April 20, 1889. Many people think that the killers at Columbine
chose the date of their crime for a reason.
Nobody really knows the reason why April is such
a violent month. Who knows why a man would blow up a building with
little kids in it, along with many adults? Who knows why two kids
walked through their school killing their fellow classmates?
We cant make excuses or give reasons for these
tragedies, we can only remember those who suffered and hope for
the best. We cannot dwell on the past, we can only wish for a brighter,
less violent future.
