As winter passes and spring approaches, everybody
knows what time it is. Its time for the good old game of baseball
to come out and about.
I couldnt wait for the season to come around, the game
just keeps me motivated, said junior Trevor Tenaglia.
As we all know, the tradition of Neshaminy baseball
is one of the highest in ranks. And to keep this tradition alive,
the team has been working hard since early February. I hope
we can all come together and just focus on the team itself,
commented senior Dennis Cox.
This year the 'Skins have nine seniors on the team,
Bob Bersinger, Brendan Shearn, Wayne Lutteroty, Anthony Truglio,
J.W. Palmer, Tom Lagler, Cox, Kevin Maloney and last, but not least,
Evan Jonekeit.
Of these nine seniors, four were chosen as the captains
to lead this year's team into another year of success. The four
chosen were Maloney, Lagler, Jonekeit and Cox.
"The captain position is just a word. We were
just chosen to keep the team inline when the team is not at its
best, said Lagler. "Our job is to act as leaders."
Although the 'Skins have nine seniors to give the
team depth and experience, the 'Skins have lost a number of starters
due to graduation.
I think that this year will be a successful year, eventhough
we lost some starters. The younger players will have to step up
too, said Cox.
The Skins started the season on a good note.
Their opening game, the 'Skins matched up against the Upper Moreland
Bears. Fired up, they scored 11 runs, winning the game by a score
of 11-4.
Cox led the offense, going 3-3 with a double and
a home run. Lagler picked up the win giving up two runs in four
strong innings of pitching.
The 'Skins next non-league game was against Holy
Ghost. The 'Skins jumped out to an early 11-1 lead led by a bases
loaded triple by Tenaglia, driving in three runs. Nieves was the
winning pitcher striking out six in three innings.
The 'Skins picked up another non-league win against
Father Judge by a score 3-2. This put their record at 3-0. However,
their three upcoming league games were much more important.
As the Skins got closer to opening day of
league play, they started to slip. They experienced a heart-breaking
loss in their first league game against C.B. West in eight innings.
The pitchers battled through seven innings, both giving up only
one run.
Neither team could manage to bring in the needed
run to win the game. However, in the bottom of the eigth inning,
a passed ball allowed a C.B. West player to score the winning run.
Following C.B. West, the Redskins had to regroup
and come together to battle the Pennsbury Falcons. The teams fought
in a close game, seeing many lead changes through the first six
innings, leaving the score at 8-8.
However, an offensive outburst from the Falcons
brought in six runs in the top of the seventh. Again the win drifted
away from the 'Skins grasp as they lost another heartbreaker. The
final score was 14-8.
The boys team traveled next to North Penn. North
Penn's pitchers seem to overpower the 'Skins. Despite a strong relief
pitching effort from sophomore Marco Tenaglia, the early runs scored
by North Penn were too much for the 'Skins to overcome. The score
ended up 10-2 and the boys fell to 0-3 in the league.
"At this point we just need to come together
as a team. This isnt a one man sport. Its going to take
all 18 of us to win a game, added Truglio.
At the present time they have the overall record
of 3-3-0 and a league record 0-3. The Skins are going to have
to work hard and stay on track so they can get a win under their
belts which has been a struggle as of late.
