First make a bid on a player you want.
Make a high bid.
The bid will be immediately accepted.
Then choose adjust offer. Adjust offer to "free" and choose "Cancel".
Do not choose makeoffer!!!
Then you will get the player for free.

Keeping players who have a Big Club Release Clause in their contract:
List them for loan when they're wanted.
