| Uuuuh....What should I say about this one? On
certain points it seems that this video has been
overdubbed (backing vocals mainly) but I'm not sure.
Maybe they just sang so infernal well on that particular
gig? Well this was still a very powerful gig indeed!
Sometimes the backing vocals sound like being taken from
the album version! Well I understand if they fixed this
up a little because this was done for the cinema release
and was shown in movie theatres before some other film.
That's also the reason why they have edited this concert
so much (sixth number in the set is edited medley!) and
for this reason, it doesn't give a too great impact as a
live documentary. But this is the only good-quality EARLY
Queen concert that we can have nowadays, so
we have to accept that. This concert was a kind of a
turning point for them and it has many fine and
unforgetable performances of some Queen songs. One of
them is White Queen and it's extra piano bit added by
Freddie. And also In the Lap of The Gods where Roger
screams stunningly. The video opens with Procession
playing in the backround and then there is a film of The
Queen arriving to the venue and preparing for the
concert. Now I'm Here is so similar to the album version,
that it really is hard to tell the difference between
them. Ogre Battle is also much slower than on their
following tours. This was one of the first times Queen
performed the light and laid-back medley (it went through
changes over years, altough Killer Queen was always part
of it). It's nice that they took the Rock-section from
March Of The Black Queen, since it's imbossible to
perform the whole song live. What follows now is
*****......well, I don't know what other people think,
but I have to admit that I personally don't like that
edited medley very much. It would be a different story if
they originally played a medley, but this medley (Son and
Daughter/Father To Son/Keep Yourself/Liar/Son and
Daughter) was edited together afterwards and the songs in
it are just bits and peaces here and there. Quite awfull
really. Well as I said this was edited for cinemas so I
shouldn't complain. Stone Cold Crazy played here, is a
quite lengendary version, altough it is very similiar to
other performances of that song. The set ends with Lap of
The Gods...Revisited and then there is a little piece of
Jailhouse Rock from their Rock'n Roll- medley, which they
always played for an encore in the early days. And Roger
smashes his kit at the end (which almost hits Freddie
when it crashes down from drum riser). That boy didn't
smash his kit too often so this rare occasion folks! |
