Floppy recovery programs
The disk recovery programs should only be used as a last resort to
recover WORD PROCESSING files which cannot be opened or read by the
user.
You should ALWAYS run Norton utilities to remove bad blocks from such
files stored on floppies BEFORE using either. Norton cures about 50%
of such problems.
Both programs are MS-DOS based and MUST be run from the DOS prompt.
Both programs recover keystrokes only, NOT diagrams or other material.
RECASC works on ONE file only and requires you to know the full path
of the file you are trying to recover and the filename and extension
of the file you are trying to recover. It also requires you to give
the full path and file name you wish to use for the recovered file.
(Don't put it back on the floppy it came from! Use the C: drive).
RECOVER recovers keystrokes from a floppy and is only for use where
the floppy directory cannot be read or the filename is corrupted and
cannot be typed into RECASC. It completely disregards file structure
and makes output files of about 50,000 characters from the keystrokes
on the disk.
The output files are dumped on the root directory of the C: drive.
Because both programs have to disregard any error signals and get the
keystrokes regardless, there is NO error checking and no error
reporting when things go wrong.
Both programs are freeware. You are expressly allowed to use and
distribute them without charge as long as they are not altered or
renamed. They remain my intellectual property. I will fix any bugs
reported and deal with any queries. I am particularly interested in
any cases where the programs do not work.
The download zip file contains the executables of both programs and
this text.
