Network Utilities

Cyberkit (943 KB, freeware, ST)
Cyberkit is an all-in-one package of standard internet functions with an intuitive interface. It offers easy-to-use Ping, TraceRoute, Finger, WhoIs, NS LookUp, QoD, Time and DBScan functions, conveniently from your system tray. Other functions include sending Keep Alive Messages and checking your email. !Updated! Now we have Cyberkit 2.5 with extensive net scanning functions added. Even smaller package, but more power.

Port Probe (367 KB, freeware, TB)
This utility can do a very basic scan of a remote system. Given sufficient time, it will report all open (listening) ports on the system. It will not, however, inform you about the function of the open port. It can be useful to detect security holes and poorly-configured firewalls.

Port Scan (10 KB, freeware, TB)
This utilily also scans the ports of a remote system, but in exchange for the greater duration of a complete scan, you'll get info on the echo replies of the open ports. Also, this program has more advanced settings and logging options than the scanner above.

Socket Tester (326 KB, freeware, TB)
This is a very useful tool to learn about internet protocols. It can function both as server, to set up a listening port, aswell as a client, to connect to open ports. It allows you to send and receive TCP packages by hand. You can use it with your friend to send each other direct messages (you'll need to know each other's IP, though) or you can log onto a mail server and post mails manually.

Tiny Web Server (66 KB, freeware, H)
This is just what the name implies, a very tiny web server. Don't expect a GUI and pages of options... this program serves web-pages, and that's what is does. Configuration is done through the command line to set the root directory, logfile directory and, if necessary, force a port and/or IP adress. To read the extensive logfiles, you may want a special logfile reader, for instance Analog.

IP Clip (105 KB, freeware, ST)
For those people with dynamic IPs who like to keep an eye on it at all times. IP Clip sits in your system tray and displays your current IP when you hold your mouse over it. It can also send the IP to the clipboard automatically.

Go!zilla (1.27 MB, freeware, ST)
This ad-supported freeware is a must for everyone who downloads files bigger than half a meg from the internet. This highly custumizable program manages all download commands you give in your browser. It can resume almost every disturbed download, manage download queue's, so that you don't have to wait with clicking more download links. Go!zilla will just queue them and start downloading when there is time/bandwidth.

HyperTerminal Private Edition (894 KB, freeware, TB)
HyperTerminal is is the default Telnet client in Win95 and Win98, but this is a much newer, much more advanced version and still free for personal use. Includes options to wait for calls, connect to services over the internet and much more. Updated to version 5.0 already... these guys are going like lightning.
