February Journal Entries

February 04

Spent most of today working on the trail maps.  Tomorrow Terry and I were supposed to hike to the beach and back, but I had to cancel it since I am working. Planning is about 1/2 way through the John Muir Trail.

February 29

Wow, it is hard to believe how much time has slipped by already.  I will try to catch up on what went on in February. Mostly it has been a planning month. The map through California is laid out and up to Elk Lake in Oregon which is part of section E. Found that Volume 2 of the trail guide is out of print and the update won't be released till May. Based on what that normally means it will be the end of June before it is actually available.  I have been able to piece a lot of it together from the hikers journals at the PCT web site. Along the same lines the PCT site has not been updated since the end of January. They are not doing much better than I am. Training continues, but has been cut back a little due to my work schedule. I finally found the tent that I am taking a sierra designs clip flashlight. You don't have to thread any poles at all and it is actually very roomy.  Our one concession to weight so far is that we are both taking two man tents. So that on those really bad nights we can just mess with putting up one tent and on the nights that we have the luxury we can put up two. With the vestibules we can make a cozy little apartment. It goes up in a couple of minutes which will be nice on those rainy nights. It's also a three season. Stocking up on the incidentals like first aid kits and moleskin. my first pair of boots for the hike are broken in and ready to go.

I finally had my first bout of fear about the hike, but it didn't last very long. Kind of the John your 55 years old what the hell are you doing thought. What I'm doing is fulfilling a dream. Last Sunday's paper had an article about seniors becoming more and more active. One of the best things going on in our society right now is the first tentative steps toward the acknowledgement of  age as merely a number.
