"Who am I ?"
The entity known as Rei Ayanami was created by blending the genetic makeup of both Lilith (the father) and what remanined of Yui Ikari (the mother) after the accident with Unit 01. Rei attained the physical appearance of her mother, yet inherited the physical characteristics from her father (white skin, red eyes). Therefore Rei is partly an angel (Shito). Because she was derived from Lilith, so too must she return to her, just as the angels must return to Adam. She denies the bond bewtween Lilith and herself because she (lithith) doesn't have human form, if she admits it, her present self may cease to be.
"I'm afraid, why is that?"
Rei was created for the sole purpose to guide Gendou Ikari to his wife, Yui, so that they can be united again after the Complementation of man. After this occurrs, he will have no need for her. He will abandon her.
"I prayed for the day he would abandon me, but now...now I fear it"
However, Rei refuses to guide him, "I am not your doll"a symbol of her breaking free of his control. Instead, she turns the fate of the human race over to Shinji.
"I think,...I believe I am the third"
Three Reis are known to have existed, amongst the countless husks that made up the Dummy Plug system. The first was killed as a child by the hands of Dr Naoko Akagi, strangled to death in a fit of rage and jealosy. Dr Akagi wished to step into the empty space provided when Yui left this world. Rei had taken her place. Dr Akagi recognised the ties between Yui and Rei, symbolising Ikari's refusal to forget his wife. Dr Akagi commited suicide immediately afterwards.
The second Rei, the first one we are introduced to at the beginning of the series, is killed by Armisael whilst she was trying to protect Shinji. This represents the close bond between Rei and Shinji, her care for him. She chose to contain the angel within Unit one, destroying both of them, than to let it attack Shinji.
The third and final Rei, due to the destruction of the Dummy Plug System, is the one responsible for conducting Third Impact, after she reunits with Lilith. She describes herself as "hopes (for mankind), accompanied with the word love"

POSITION: 2nd CHILD - DESIGNATED PILOT OF EVA UNIT 02
"Why am I crying?"
Asuka fears being alone, that she will loose her identity if others leave her. Since she was a child, she had been rejected by every prominent figure; her father; her step-mother; and her mother.
After this happened she decided that she wouldn't depend on anyone, "I will think by myself and live by myself" yet she hated it at the same time. Her arrogance was a tool to mask the pain that this caused her.
"I'm the garbage now'
"...because I have no other value"
Like Shinji, Asuka pilots the EVA because she feel that it justifies her existence. As long as she pilots EVA, people will notive her. When she looses this, when she was rejected by NERV (When Kaoru was brought in to replace her), she looses any value that she had. That is why she goes into a depression.

"What am I supposed to do?"
As the Instrumentality of man begins, Rei hands the fate of the human race over to Shinji. It is up to him now as to what happens to the world, the world in which we live.
"What do you fear?"
"I fear...my father"
Shinji truely fears failure, rejection, being hate by others. When his father abandoned him, he thought it was his fault, thus he developed a fear of contact with people.
"See, they all hate me"
"I have no other value"
Shinji is insecure, about himself, and his relationship with others. To be secure, one has to have value. Shinji uses piloting EVA as his his value, his justification for existence.
"When I pilot EVA, they praise me"
"What should I do?"
Shinji wished for destruction, death, and a return to nothingness. He wished for a closed world that was comfortable for him, in order to protect his weaknesses, protect his few pleasures. He wished for a world with nothing in it. However, if there are not others in the world to compare yourself to, a world filled with nothing, then there is no difference between you and nothing. You cannot distinguish your true self.
"This is another world, another posibility within me?"
With the help of the alternate reality created, and the points of others, he manages to justify his existence. He accepts that there must be another him who is not an EVA pilot, thus EVA is not his only value. Realising this, his comes to the conclusion that he is no more or no less then himself,...he can stay.
"I want to continue living in this world"

NAME:SUZUHARA, TOUJI AGE: 14
POSITION: 4th CHILD - DESIGNATED PILOT OF EVA UNIT 03
One of Shinji's classmates, Toji only agrees to pilot Eva Unit 03 if his injured sister could be relocated to NERV's private hospital. However, Unit 03 becomes infected by the 13th Angel during tests and Toji is nearly killed at the hands of Unit 01, controlled by the dummy-plug system.
