CLOSE FIGHT DECIDES ENERGY RELEASE FOUR CYLINDER/ROTARY SHOOTOUT FINALISTS The final qualifying round of the Energy Release Series for four cylinder and rotary powered cars was held at Willowbank Raceway on Saturday May 19th. Competition was intense as only the eight contestants topping the final points tally over the series will be eligible to compete in the Energy Release Shootout at the 11th Annual Four Cylinder and Rotary Jamboree on June 16th. At that event, all competitors will contest three rounds of shoot-out racing with the top two point scorers from those races fighting out a $1,000 winner take all final. Ashley Mason went into the final qualifying event on top of the points in his RX7 Mazda but a first round loss saw him bumped back down the order. Rob Oberg's Porsche 924 damaged a gearbox in the second round leaving him level with Mason but John Nelson went as far as the third round in his Suburu WRX gaining enough points to edge past into the lead on 75 points. A semi final finish by Rodney Taylor saw him jump from fifth to equal first but it was Peter Healy who gained the most. His runner up finish saw him move from outside the eight in eleventh to seventh securing a spot in the shoot out. The event was won by Andrew Smith in his VW Manx Buggy.
