Ah, my U2 TRL Day, for those who still care...
One hell of a day, So I get my new U2 cd Monday morning October 30th, 2000, however, I didn't
have a cd player on me. Heard it late that night of course.
I was off to Times Square, wearing a hat and sunglasses, just in case anyone
from work was around (called in sick). Yeah, yeah, ok I know, I looked like a bit of a jerk.
Once I got there I took off the shades. Now every U2 expierience is a great
one. Everyone was going nuts when the band would wave down to us. Minor
complaint, I could hardly hear the guys playing! MTV had a horrible sound
set up, all things aside though it was a great to see them live again. It's
been three years for me. The setlist was:
Elevation (sounded great)
Beautiful Day (actually heard this well)
New York (didn't know what song it was till after, barely heard anything)
Elevation (great again!)
(sorry if I have the order wrong)
I'm also told that they played these songs earlier for rehearsal.
Afterwards I had nothing to do till about 8, it's, pardon my french but
fucking freezing! But I decide to hang out with some other fans and try to
meet the band. It payed off! A black explorer (I think) pulls out of MTV
with Larry and Adam. I ended up meeting Larry Mullen (picture link below), he talked to some of
us for a good 5 minutes, and signed some autographs. When he first came out
it was me and two or three other guys, so he talked to the three of us, he
asked us how they sounded. We were all like "YEAH GREAT MAN!!!" Even though
we barely heard, I thought that was funny. I would have met Adam too but too
many people were in front of him.
Much later.. Bono's car comes out. It is about to drive away but stops
short, cars behind are beeping the horns. Bono steps out of the vechile. I
came over patted his back (too many fans were in the way for a handshake)
and said it was a great show (keep in mind everyone else told him too, it
wasn't as if I had a personal conversation w/him). He was really nice to
everyone but told us, I'll try to remember as best as possible, "Listen
guys, I'm really sorry but we made a deal with the NYPD not to stop traffic,
but thank you so much for coming out here to see us play and waiting for us
we really appreciate it." All three guys were real nice to us. I didn't see
Edge. But I'm informed he was in the car with Bono. Excellent experience to say the least.
