McMaster University Sustainable Community Research Group

Sustainable Community Design

The design of sustainable communities has been, and continues to be, the main focus of the group's research. An important distinction should be made between the design of wholly new communities (built on "greenfields", or undeveloped land) and those built as a retrofit or infill to an existing community (in an urban core or a fringe suburb). While the group's research addresses all three areas of sustainable community design, it is towards retrofit and infill that our attention is now focused. (The pictures on the right are examples of the kind of good urban design we are aiming for, both from Old Quebec City.)
