With more than seven and a half centuries of history, POZEGA is city of great cultural tradition and beautiful atchitecture. It is the centre Pozega Valley, named by the old Romans "Valis Aurea" - Golden Valley. Ever since it was mentioned for the first time in the written history - in 1227 - the city has played an inportant role in medieval as well in modern life in Slavonia. It was the centre of the Pozega County and, after the expulsion of the invading Tutkish army in 1688, an important cultural centre. The first grammar school in Slavonia was founded in Pozega in 1699, and between 1763 and 1774, Academia Possegana was ative universety centre.

"Slavonian Athens"

In the 19th Century, Pozega was named "Slavonian Athens". It was an immensely prolific cultural period when many culture and art societes were founded, some of which are still active: library, choir, etc. At the same time secound printing house in Slavonia was founded in Pozega and started in 1863 with the publishing of the "Slavonac" magazine. In 1873 the first artisan and workers society was founded in Pozega.
