Where to find MechWarrior 1

If Activision could've ported this little gem to SVGA, added some nifty sounds, and a modification / salvage option, maybe they wouldn't have gotten so many complaints about the MW2 series. What did this have that MW2 didn't? How about falling down, getting up, realistic jumpjets (with limited fuel), instant-beam lasers and PPCs that wouldn't show up again until MechWarrior 3, strict no-repair, only-reload-if-you-bought-extra-ammo longterm campaign missions, a free mission structure that let you pick your fights as long as you followed the trail of clues and watched the calendar, contracts that could be haggled over for better terms, and a realistic diplomacy system that cut you off from House missions if you just finished attacking them! The graphics look dated now but were impressive for realtime solid polygons back then. A good number of mechs were available in 3025 configurations, though not modifiable. Repairs and ammo were costly but contracts could be negotiated skillfully. The plot revolved around an attempt by the treacherous Matabushi Corporation, backed by the Dark Wing mercenaries, to strip the Vandenburg family of their lands and title (and gain easy corporate pickings in the process) by subverting the govenment of Ander's Moon. Young Gideon Braver Vandenburg (see my Crescent Hawk's Revenge page to learn his eventual fate) must assemble a mercenary team (the Blazing Aces), gain experience, mechs, and cash, and restore his family to the the rightful governance of the Ander's Moon. Trivia note: though you can't fight her mech-to-mech, you can get into a bar brawl with none other than Natasha Kerensky. Also, for students of Philosophy, look in Marik space, just east-northeast of Atreus: you'll find Sophie's World, "A center of arts and learning". (for non-Philosophers, look up "Jostein Gaarder" at Amazon).

Where to find MechWarrior 1

Looking for CHI, CHR, or MW1? You can do it the legal way by searching for Powerhits: BattleTech - good luck! Or, you can follow one of these links to find them. These will take you to several Abandonware sites, where you can begin your search. NOTE: I do not condone software piracy. Abandonware, however, is a special case. Abandonware must meet all of the following criteria: 1. The program is no longer commerically available for purchase. 2. The program must be over 5 years old (some say 4). 3. The manufacturer no longer supports the program in question. Some sites differ in their versions of these guidelines, and some are more or less scrupulous than others, but all adhere to some form of these rules. I say again for the timid: Abandonware is still technically piracy, and therefore illegal, but I have to repeat the Abandonware credo: "Better spread than dead!" If nobody stands to profit by it, then it can only serve to help spread the influence and good press of those involved - in this case, FASA and BattleTech, and Activision and Westwood (since Infocom and MediaGenic are kaput). Here's where the letter of the law and the spirit of the law part ways. NOTE: I am not responsible for what appears on these websites, nor am I responsible for what you download off of them - if you find illegal software, viruses, corrupt ZIP files, etc., please contact THAT SITE'S webmaster, not me. That being said, rarely will you encounter problems with any of these.

And remember, you'll need MoSlo to play MW1 on any post-1988 computer: MoSlo Home Page (download the free no-frills version, v1.32, or pay for the Deluxe v2.0), or download it directly here: MoSlo.
