Yay, I finally got to see the Stargate movie. It was pretty good,
great special effects, but you really have to be a Stargate SG-1 fan to appreciate it.
STORY
OK, in 1929 (I think), Catherine Langford went to Egypt with her father, to examine an
archeological find, the egyptian Stargate. When she was there, Catherine took a necklace, it was
made out of gold, and it had a picture of an eye in it, the symbol of Ra. 65 years later, she walks
in on Dr Daniel Jackson, who is delivering a speech to the acedemic community, and trying to persuede
them that aliens build the pyramids. Everyone walks out, but Catherine invites him to the Creek
Mountain Complex. He goes there, only to find that he has been asked to figure out the Egypt cartouche.
Which he does, along with figuring out the entire Stargate system. By this time, Colonel Jack O'Neill
has been brought out of reitrement, after the tragic death of his son Tyler (Charlie in the Stargate series),
and joins Jackson, Major Kawalsky, and some other misfits who were chosen to go to Abydos.
When they arrive, they set up camp out side an exact replica of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The others
in the team do not seem to reflect Daniel's enthusiasm, and want him to get them home, but he can't,
as there is no cartouche there. They try to find civilisation, but Dr Jackson takes a little ride on
some kind of domesticated wooly mammoth look alike thing. They find the Abydonians (Kasauf and Skarre), and they think that
Daniel is a god, because Catherine gave him her Ra's eye necklace, and they proclaim them gods. In the
little Abydos village, it is forbidden to read or write. Daniel gets given a wife, Shau'ri (Sha're in Stargate SG1)
and she tells him that she has seen the Stargate symbol for Earth before. She shows him where, but the last
symbol for Earth (Abydos point of origin) is rubbed off, so they can never go home. Meanwhile, Ra's ship
has taken up residence on top of the pyramid, and is killing off the SGC members.
Jackson and O'Neill get captured, but poor Daniel gets killed by a nasty staff weapon, and then revived
by the sarcoughagus. He finds Ra, and then Ra tells him that he's gonna send the Nuclear Bomb that O'Neill
brought, back to Earth, with some of his own stuff, to destroy Earth. Since the SGC people have been declaring
Ra a false god, Daniel must shoot Jack, to prove that Ra is a god. Skarre reflects light into Daniel's eye,
and shows him that he has someones gun. Daniel shoots the staff weapon near Ra, and everyone makes a break for it.
Death gliders come, and everyone runs to the pyramid. Skarre's friend doesn't make it :-(. Shau'ri gets shot, so
Daniel takes her to Ra's ship, and uses the sarcoughagus on her. When he's back down, he and Jack send the Nuke up to Ra,
which blows his ship up and kills him!!!!
Daniel, with Skarre's help has figured out the final symbol to get home, but he stays behind to live with Shau'ri.
MOVIE MISTAKES
All through the movie, when you gets shots of the guys on the other
planet, if you look at their sunglasses you see the white boards and
film crew's reflection.
After Sha'uri is killed, James Spader puts her in the sarcoughagus.
Just before the lid closes, you can see her eyelid flicker.
When Jackson and the troops first arrive on the planet through the
Stargate they carefully leave the building they arrived in and look back
at it. We see the building, the pyramid behind it and the sky with three
moons. This planet is supposed to be in another galaxy, but the highest
of the three moons in this shot bears a striking resemblance to the Earth's
moon (with its face like appearance).
When Ra prepares to send the bomb through the Stargate, Jackson and
O'Neil disguised as Egyptians enter the building in front of Ra's
pyramid ship along with some other Egyptians who proceed to shoot dead
some of Ra's workers. During this battle the doorway to the building
closes before the others can get in. Now it's a big heavy rock door so
presumably it's rather difficult to break down or force open, but just
after Ra and his ship get blown up at the end we see Jackson, O'Neil
and Sha'uri standing in the doorway which is now open again. We never
see how they get that door open.
