Where to get Suse

SUSE 9 offers a superb printed manual, a great installation interface, a modern KDE system in addition to the more standard, older GNOME interface, and a new kernel build. It's easy to see why Novell thought enough of the software to buy the company.

SUSE understands that it's going to have to exist in a Windows-dominated world, and has gone a long way towards compatibility, starting with capabilities that make it easy to install the OS in dual-boot configuration alongside Windows XP or Windows 2000.

SUSE makes Microsoft's NTFS file system easily accessible, and also includes utilities for re-sizing an NTFS partition. SUSE 9 runs the 2.4.21 kernel with 2.6 enhancements. The older kernel is more stable, but the enhancements of 2.6 are certainly worth considering: true 64-bit support, a new journaling file system (transaction-based so transactions can be backed out of easily), better security, better scheduling and power management and a better sound-system architecture.

Ten reasons to switch to SuSE 9.0

  1. Easy

Usually, SuSE Linux is easier and quicker to install than Windows.

YaST enables you to install your SUSE LINUX system in in a few steps. In most cases, no additional drivers are needed for your hardware.

  2. Secure

A SUSE LINUX system provides more protection against viruses and dialers than Windows. Moreover, you are notified automatically about any security updates, which you can easily install directly from the Internet.

  3. More

Linux is more than a mere operating system. Linux is also a collection of useful applications, many of which are installed during the installation and can be utilized immediately after the initial system start-up. This includes:

  4. Inexpensive

Apart from the actual operating system, the extremely attractive price includes the applications listed above (and many more) as well as free installation support and free bug fixes/security updates via the web. Professionals will appreciate the development environment, server functions, and configuration tools shipped with the Professional version without any surcharge.

Furthermore, no license costs are incurred for the installation on multiple machines or for software subject to the GPL (General Public License).

  5. Compatible

You do not have to remove your old operating systems in order to install Linux.

The installation routine of SUSE LINUX detects installed systems and offers you the possibility to boot SUSE LINUX or a different operating system when the computer is powered on.

Almost all Windows applications have Linux-based counterparts. You can easily access the data stored in your Windows partitions.

SUSE LINUX enables read and write access to FAT32 partitions (Windows 95, 98, ME) and read access to NTFS partitions (Windows NT, 2000, XP).

  6. Professional

A SUSE LINUX Professional system is suitable for (almost) all purposes. All tools needed to customize the system for the intended purpose are included. For example, the system can be configured as a firewall (packet filter) or as a mail, web, print, DNS, DHCP, or file server. Linux systems can also be used as Internet routers for networks or as simple desktop computers.

A Linux system does not entail any forced registration or activation. After all, why should it be necessary to activate software for which you already paid money?

  7. Private

SUSE LINUX respects your privacy more than other PC operating systems. Internet programs do not transmit any useless or undesired information.

  8. Mobile

Thanks to Palm synchronization and WLAN support, you can enjoy unlimited mobility with a PDA or notebook. Using the profile manager, your laptop can access the network and hardware configurations at various locations with a mouse click.

  9. Different

Linux is not Windows! However, though Linux is somewhat different, you will soon notice that it is not only just as easy to use but allows you to use your PC in a much more adaptable and individual way. Linux systems offer more configuration possibilities than any other system. For a perfect work environment, various graphical user interfaces (Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, WindowMaker) can be configured freely by all users on the PC.

  10. Alternative

In the past, Linux used to be a complicated system for technically inclined users and programmers. However, following its sweeping victory in the server segment, Linux is now in the course of conquering the desktop with a simplified usage and a wealth of preinstalled applications. Thus, SUSE LINUX is the ideal system for workstations. SUSE LINUX is THE alternative!
